Description

MAD Festival, 1976. These six black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show people engaged in various activities at the 1976 Music, Art and Dance Festival in Lacey, Washington. All of these images were captured outdoors on the Saint Martin's campus. Image 2 shows a fairly close-up shot of a rabbit in a cage. Image 3 shows a toddler and two adults in the cab of a fire engine. The toddler is nearest to the camera. All three people are looking toward the camera. Image 4 shows approximately 10-12 people, both children and adults, riding on the back end of a fire engine. Image 5 shows a line of fire engines, each with many people riding on it, driving past the camera. Image 6 is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 7 shows an early automobile which appears to have extra seated in the back, similar to a van. A sign on the side reads "GARSON" and "REPRESENTATIVE, DIST. 22, POS 2, G.O.P." Image 8 shows three children seated in the back of a station wagon with the back hatch open. Image 9 shows many men and at least one child lining up to start a foot race. All of these people are wearing shorts. This image was captured from in front of the runners. Image 10 shows the runners preparing to begin the race. This image was captured from the left-hand side of the line of runners. Image 11 shows a blurry shot of the runners beginning the race. Image 12 shows three men, two women and one little girl standing at what is presumably the race's finish line. Image 13 shows a single runner passing a small crowd of race spectators. Images 14 and 15 both show runners crossing the finish line. Image 16 shows six people seated at two tables set up on the stage. The man at the far left is leaning over and speaking with someone standing in front of the stage. Image 17 shows a woman holding a boom microphone speaking to a man standing next to a television camera. A second man without any television equipment is standing behind the man at the camera. Image 18 shows two men standing on the stage. The man on the left is wearing a baseball cap and is speaking into a microphone. The man on the right is Mark Brown. Mr. Brown is looking down at some papers held in his hands. Image 19 shows many spectators, both seated and standing, near a tent. Image 20 shows many spectators sitting or standing in a row. Two separate tents are covering a portion of the crowd. Image 21 shows approximately twelve spectators seated on some bleachers. Centered in the image are a man and woman dressed in Old West-ish outfits. Image 22 shows three women holding buckets. Image 23 shows a man with a mustache holding a folded pamphlet or program. He is standing next to the stage. Image 24 shows a woman standing next to a very large metal tub of water. One of her hands is thrust into the water, and a large splash is erupting from the water's surface. The woman is filling a bucket for a bucket line race. The bucket itself is not visible in this image. Image 25 shows a woman wearing a baseball cap dumping water from a bucket into a metal barrel. Image 26 shows a woman dunking a bucket into the large metal tub. This is a different woman than the one seen in image 24. Image 27 shows a child standing in approximately one inch of water on the roadway where the bucket line race is occurring. Image 28 shows yet another different woman dunking a bucket into the large tub of water. Image 29 shows two women exchanging two buckets. Images 30 through 32 show women passing buckets to each other. Image 33 shows four men standing inside of a vendor's stall. A sign across the top of the stall reads "BEER HALL." Image 34 shows a woman with permed hair wearing glasses. She is using her left hand to shield the sun from her eyes. She is shown in profile. Image 35 shows a young man seated on bleachers holding a walkie talkie speaking to a young man with glasses seated behind him. A young woman is visible to the left of the man with glasses. Image 36 is effectively identical to image 35. Image 37 shows a team of four women participating in a bucket-line race. Printed at intervals along one long edge of each of these strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM" and "KODAK TRI X PAN FILM."
