Description

MAD Festival, 1979. These six black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using three separate film rolls, so some of physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show several men taking part in a footrace, and floats in a parade. Image 2a shows a man in shorts and a tank top running down a sidewalk. The man is also taking a small cup from a woman standing alongside the sidewalk. Image 3a shows three runners coming toward the camera and being handed small cups by people standing alongside the sidewalk. Image 4a shows a runner dumping the contents of one of the small cups on his face. Images 5a and 6a each show a different runner drinking from one of the small cups. Image 10a shows a station wagon pulling a float carrying a skateboard half-pipe. Images 11a and 12a show someone skateboarding on the half-pipe. Image 13a shows two young women in dresses holding a banner which reads "Aglow." Several other young women are walking behind them. Image 14a is very similar to the previous image, but here all of the young women are nearer to the camera. Image 15a shows two young women in formal dresses and tiaras riding a float which looks like a gondola with a cage on the back. One of the young women is inside the cage. Image 16a is nearly identical to the previous image. Images 17a and 18a show the young women in the cage part of the float. Image 19a shows a man in glasses looking through some upright supports on one of the floats toward the camera. He is smiling. Image 20a shows a young woman who appears to be riding on a rear section of the gondola/cage float which was not visible previously. Image 21a shows four women in bonnets and aprons and a man in a chef's hat playing a mandolin riding on a float. A banner on the side of the float reads "RSVP" and "RETIRED SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM." Image 22a is effectively identical to the previous image. Image 23a shows an older fire engine with a sign on the side which reads "TUMWATER LIONS CLUB." Image 24a shows what appears to be the Timberline High School dance team in matching uniforms following behind three children carrying a banner which reads "TIMBERLINE HIGH SCHOOL BLAZERS." Image 25 has the right-hand side cut off. The remaining portion of the image shows the dance team nearer to the camera than in the previous image. The images in group "b" show people carrying stacks of milk crates. All of the images in this group were captured inside the Capital Pavilion on the Saint Martin's campus. Image 15 shows a man in shorts and a backwards visor carrying a tall stack of milk crates. Ken Balsley is at the left-hand side of the image looking up at the stack of crates. George Barner, Jr. is on the right-hand side of the image, also looking up at the stack. Image 16b is very similar to the previous image, but here the photographer is to the right-hand side of the person carrying the crates instead of behind them. The stack of crates appears to be tumbling over. Image 17b shows two people preparing to lift stacks of milk crates. The images in group "c" show representatives of McDonald's restaurants participating in a parade. Image 36c shows a man driving a convertible. A banner on the side of the car reads "Ronald McDonald." The man is not dressed as Ronald McDonald. Image 37c shows a woman wearing a pantsuit with a McDonald's nametag on her jacket lapel, and a man dressed as the McDonald's character the Professor walking in the parade. Image 38c shows the woman with the nametag at left and the Professor at right. They are posing together for a photo. Image 39c shows the Professor waving.
