Description

MAD Festival, 1979. These six black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using four separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show scenes from the 1979 MAD Festival parade. This parade appears to have proceeded from west to east on Pacific Avenue in Lacey, Washington. Image 24a shows a woman in a formal dress, tiara and cape riding on a parade float. She is waving. Behind her on the float is a model of the Washington State Capitol building, which is approximately 8 feet tall. "OLYMPIA" is spelled out on the float in front of the woman. Image 25a shows two women in formal dresses, tiaras and capes riding on a parade float. They are both waving. Image 26a shows a blurry shot of Pacific Avenue with some of the parade participants line up over on the right-hand side of the image. These participants are children, and those in front are holding a banner which reads "timberland regional library." Images 27a and 28a show the children carrying the timberland regional library banner. Image 29a shows approximately twelve children wearing a variety of different costumes which do not appear to share a theme. Images 30a through 34a show more children in costumes. Image 35a shows a man driving a sports car in the parade. There is a banner on the side of the car which reads "Ronald McDonald." The man does not appear to be dressed as Ronald McDonald. The images in group "b" show group photos and performances associated with the 1979 MAD Festival. Image 15b shows four men and one woman posing together for a group photo. They are in a garden next to an unknown building. The man second from the right is Wes Barclift. The man at center appears to be Mike Kreidler. Image 16b is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 17b shows a man playing a grand piano. This image was likely captured inside the Capital Pavilion. Image 18b shows a man sitting on a piano bench but not playing. A woman is leaning over him and speaking into his ear. Her arms are resting on his shoulders. Image 19b is similar to the previous image, but here the woman is not in the image. A man in a tuxedo is standing on the stage in the background. Image 20b shows 10 young women wearing fringed leotards standing in a row and performing a song and dance routine. Only some of the women are singing into microphones. Images 31b through 33b show a young man in a wildly patterned shirt playing a drumset. Image 34b shows a man with a mustache playing a drumset. The images in group "c" show people participating in the 1979 MAD Festival Parade. The parade proceeded from west to east on Pacific Avenue in Lacey, Washington. Image 4c shows three girls wearing marching band uniform hats and jackets with skirts. They are carrying a banner which reads "OLYMPIA DRILLETTES" and "FOE #21." There are two adult women flanking these three girls. There are many other girls dressed in the marching band-type uniforms marching in formation in the background. These girls appear to be doing a straight-armed salute. Image 5c is very similar to the previous image. Image 6c shows the girls walking in formation. Image 7c shows several of the girls with their arms over their heads. Image 8c shows a pickup truck pulling an Airstream trailer. There is a banner on the side of the trailer but it is not readable. Image 9c shows a car with a large amount of balloons tied to the top driving in the parade. Some children on skateboards are visible in the background. The images in group "d" show what appears to be an awards ceremony in the Capital Pavilion. Image 21d is very underexposed, making it hard to make out the image. Image 22d shows approximately 10-12 people standing around casually in a loose group. The man nearest to the camera is speaking into a microphone. What appears to be the MAD Fest stage is visible in the background. Image 23d shows a closer-up view of the group. A woman is presenting a man in plaid pants a trophy. The man is wearing a shirt which reads "FEARLESS FREDDIE." Image 24d shows the woman who presented the trophy standing next to the man who received the trophy. Printed at intervals along one long edge of each of these strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM 5063."
