Description

MAD Festival, 1979. These six black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using two separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical number on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show scenes from the 1979 MAD Festival parade. Image 41a shows a woman in a formal dress and tiara riding on a parade float. She is sitting on a throne inside a cage. Image 42a is a closer-up image of the young woman on the float. Image 43a shows three people pushing or pretending to push a parade float from behind. The nearest of these people to the camera appears to be Ken Balsley. The front half of the float is beyond the right-hand edge of the image. Image 44a shows the same parade float being pushed, but here it is farther away from the camera. Image 1a shows a man and a woman riding in an early convertible automobile. The woman is Anna Homann and she is riding in the passenger seat of the car. The man is driving. A small banner hanging on the passenger's side door of the car reads "GRAND MARSHALL" and "Anna Homann." Image 2a is effectively identical to the previous image. Image 3a shows two men and a woman riding in a convertible sports car. The woman is riding in the passenger's seat, one man is driving, and one man is sitting on the back of the back seat. The man sitting on the back seat is Dick Pust. There is a small banner on the passenger's side door of the car which reads "LACEY MAD PRESIDENT and Mrs Dick Pust." This somewhat confusing text is trying to state that Dick Pust was the MAD Festival President, and his wife is also riding in the car. Image 4a is very similar to the previous image, but here the car is nearer to the camera. Image 5a shows Karen Fraser riding on top of the back seat in the back of a convertible sports car. Tim Malone is in the passenger's seat, and an unknown person is driving the car. A small banner on the passenger's side door of the car reads "LACEY MAYOR Karen Fraser husband, Tim Malone." Image 6a shows the car nearer to the camera. Image 7a shows two children dressed as clowns and one adult dressed as a clown walking in the parade. Image 8a shows two men riding in a convertible sports car. Lyle Watson is sitting on top of the passenger seat of the car. An unknown man is driving the car. The images in group "b" show people dressed as clowns and a person displaying art. Images 29b through 36b show the man dressed as a clown holding the child. The man is shown from the chest up. Images 37b and 40b shows a woman in a tank top wearing clown makeup. Image 41b shows a child hiding behind a balloon and touching a clown's shoes. The clown's legs are visible from the knee down. The child is crouching. Image 42b is very similar to the previous image, but here the child is not hiding behind the balloon. Images 43b through 3b show a man dressed as a clown kneeling down to get pictures with two children. Images 4b through 6b shows a woman standing next to a large, framed painting hanging on a wall. Many other framed art pieces are also hanging on the wall. These last three images are from the art exhibit portion of the MAD Festival. Printed at intervals along one long edge of each of these strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM 5063."
