Description

MAD Festival, 1979. These five black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using two separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show musical performances, dance performances, a Miss Thurston County contestant holding a bowl, a woman standing next to a van, and people running in a foot race. Image 21a shows Johnny Lewis's band performing on stage. His band consists of five men, including himself, and one woman. Image 22a is similar to the previous image, but here an additional man is on stage speaking or singing into a microphone. Images 23a through 26a show an all-female choir performing. Image 28a is quite blurry, but appears to show someone performing a dance routine. Image 29a shows five women standing on an outdoor stage and wearing similar outfits. These outfits consist of very long skirts and vest-like tops. Four of the women are standing in a row and linking hands. The fifth woman is off toward the right and is playing a tambourine. Image 30a shows one of the woman dancing solo. Image 31a shows a woman wearing a tiara and a sash which appears to read "MISS THURSTON COUNTY" admiring a ceramic bowl. A table filled with jars and ceramic items is visible in the foreground. A parking lot is in the background. Image 32a is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 33a shows a woman wearing a long, loose-fitting floral-print dress singing into a microphone. Images 34a through 36a are very similar to image 33a. Image 37a shows the woman seen singing in the four previous images standing next to a van in a parking lot. Printed on the side of the van is "ASSEMBLY OF GOD" and "LYNDEN." Image 38a is effectively identical to image 37a. Image 39a shows many people in running outfits preparing to start a race. The Capital Pavilion is visible in the background. A "START" banner is visible above the group of people. Image 41a shows the people having started the race. Image 42a shows three men running the race. Cars are parked along the road the men are running on. The Capital Pavilion is again visible in the background. Images 43a and 44a are very similar to image 42a. Image 1a shows one man running down a walkway through a wooded area. The images in group "b" show a bagpipe and drum band playing in a parade. This group is the Olympia Highlanders.Image 40b shows the group in formation. Image 41b shows a man playing the bagpipes. Two women and another man are visible behind him playing bagpipes. Image 42b shows a closer-up view of the man from the previous image playing the bagpipes. A shoulder patch reading "OLYMPIA HIGHLANDERS" is on the man's shoulder. Image 43b shows a man in a bearskin military hat playing a drum. Printed at intervals along one long edge of these strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM 5063."
