MAD Festival, 1979. These four black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show scenes from the 1979 MAD Festival parade. This parade proceeded from eastward down Pacific Avenue in Lacey, Washington.
Image 9 shows three people riding in a small, convertible sports car. Wes Barclift is sitting on the back portion of the open top of the car. His wife, Kay Barclift, is seated in the passenger's seat. An unknown person is driving the car. A banner on the passenger's side door of the car reads "TUMWATER MAYOR and Mrs." and "Wes Barclift." Mr. Barclift is waving toward the camera. Image 10 shows a woman in a fringed dress walking in the parade. Her arms are held out in a breast-stroke-like posture. She may be performing a baton-twirling routine, but no baton is visible in the image. Image 11 shows a work truck with musicians playing in the bed. A bearded man is standing and playing electric guitar. Approximately twelve young people are playing various instruments, including brass instruments and woodwinds. A drum kit is partially visible as well. A sign on the passenger's side door of the truck reads "Johnny Lewis's Junior Swing Band sponsored by South Sound Center." Image 11 shows three young women in matching long, floral-print dresses riding on the hood of a car. These women are also wearing sashes, showing that they are Miss Thurston County contestants. Image 13 shows a woman waving at the camera through the passenger's side window of a car. Image 26 shows many people lined up along the sidewalk on Pacific Avenue. Some are seated, some are standing. The parade is not passing these people in this image. Image 28 shows a parade float with a man and woman dancing on the front end and a woman sitting on a throne enclosed in a cage on the back end. Three people carrying flags are marching with the parade. Image 29 shows the woman seated on the throne on the float. She is likely the Miss Thurston County contest winner of 1979. Image 30 shows Anna Homann riding in the passenger's seat of a early automobile. An unknown man in a boater's cap is driving the car. A sign on the passenger's side door of the car reads "GRAND MARSHALL" and "Anna Homann." The Capital Pavilion is partially visible in the background. Image 31 is very similar to the previous image, but here the car has progressed slightly farther in the parade. The Capital Pavilion is fully visible in the background. Image 32 shows Dick Pust seated on the trunk portion of a convertible car, his wife seated in the passenger's seat, and an unknown person driving the car. A sign on the passenger's side door of the car reads "LACEY MAD PRESIDENT and Mrs." and "Dick Pust." Image 33 again shows the Johnny Lewis Junior Band playing in the back of a work truck (as seen in image 11). Image 35 shows two flag bearers preceding the float seen in images 28 and 29. The float itself is only partially visible at the left-hand edge of the image. Image 36 is very similar to the previous image, but here the flag bearers and the float have progressed toward the right-hand side of the image frame. Image 37 is effectively identical to image 35. Image 38 shows a single flag bearer holding his flag out at an angle in front of himself. Image 39 is effectively identical to image 29. Image 40 i similar to the previous image, but here the dancers at the front of the float are also visible.
Printed at intervals along one long edge of each of these strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM 5063."Made/Created
