Description

MAD Festival, Unknown Dates. These eight black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using two separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show musical performances, dance performances, and scenes from the Miss Thurston County pageant at a MAD Festival. Image 7 shows Dick Pust wearing a tuxedo jacket and speaking into a microphone. He is standing in front of the stage. A person visible to the right of Mr. Pust is crouching down in front of the stage and manipulating some cables. Image 8a shows five young women in fringed leotards standing in a line and facing toward the right. A man in a tuxedo is speaking to the young woman at the far right. A small gazebo-type structure is visible on a platform at the right-hand side of the image. Image 9a is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 10a is very similar to the previous two images, but here the women in line appear to be walking toward the left-hand side of the image frame. Image 11a shows approximately ten young women, all in very similar fringed leotards, standing in a line with their arms around each other's waists. They appear to be doing a chorus line. Image 12a is similar to the previous image, but here the young women have broken out of their line and are performing a choreographed dance number. Image 13a shows a young woman in a long formal dress and a tiara singing into a microphone. She is also wearing a sash which reads "MISS THURSTON COUNTY." Immediately to the right of the woman is Dick Pust. The gazebo-like structure is visible in the background. Image 14a shows the young woman from the previous image singing into a microphone. A woman standing on the stage in the background is also singing into a microphone. Image 17a shows approximately six children (three boys and three girls) performing a dance. The three boys are in a line at the left-hand side of the image, and the girls, all in long skirts, and in a line at the center of the image. Images 18a through 19a show other scenes from the same dance. Image 20a shows two little girls, one in a long skirt and one in pants, performing a dance together. Images 21a through 23a show the same dance. Image 30a shows a young woman in a knee-length dress singing into a microphone. She is also pointing roughly in the direction of the camera. She also has a circle with the number 9 on it on her right hip. A woman singing into a microphone on stage is visible in the background. Image 31a shows a young woman in a floor-length dress singing into a microphone. She has a number 10 on her hip. A man playing an electric guitar and a man playing electric bass are partially visible in the background. Image 32a is very similar to the previous image, but here a different young woman in a floor-length dress is singing into a microphone. Image 33a shows a young woman wearing a long gown and a tiara standing next to Dick Pust. The young woman is on the left and Dick Pust is on the right. They are both standing in front of a stage. Image 34a shows the young woman from the previous image playing a piano. The images in group "b" show scenes from a MAD Festival parade, a group photo of a band, a wood-carving demonstration, two signs and scenes from an art exhibition. Image 8b shows a group of young women in costumes similar to that of a marching band marching in formation in the parade. Three of the young woman are marching in front of the main body and are carrying a banner which reads "OLYMPIA DRILLETTES." Two adult women appear to be marching with this group. Image 9b shows the drillettes group having marched nearer to the camera. Image 10b shows a skateboard half-pipe being pulled by a station wagon in the parade. The side of the station wagon reads "Olympia Skateboard Park." Children on roller skates and skateboards are around the half-pipe. Image 11b shows a group of people in various costumes marching behind a banner which reads "Aglow." Image 12b shows a long parade float with a gondola-type boat at the front end with a woman riding in it. There is a structure similar to a human-sized birdcage at the center of the float, from in side which a young woman is waving. The side of the float reads "CAPITAL FANTASY." Image 13b shows a closer-up view of the young woman in the cage-like structure. Image 19b shows a scene from the parade. Several costumes characters and some spectators are in the foreground. The nearest of these costumed people to the camera is someone dressed as the McDonald's character, The Hamburglar. Image 21b shows a group of people in Scottish Highlander costumes marching in formation. Most are playing bagpipes, but some are playing drums. This group is the Olympia Highlanders. Image 22b shows a closer-up view of several of the marching Highlanders. Image 23b shows a posed group photo of the Highlanders posing in front of a single-storey building. Image 24b shows a bearded man in glasses seated at a bench and working on a wood-carving project of some kind. A woman wearing a kimono and facing away from the camera is partially visible behind the man. Image 25b shows five men standing around in a circle. Some of the men are wearing aprons. They appear to be standing in a food vendor area of the MAD Festival. Images and 26b and 27b show a map/sign showing the various areas of the festival. Image 28b shows a sign which reads "MAD MAD MAD... ... MAD SPECIAL" and "ALL BOXES 1/3 OFF." Image 29b shows Johnny Lewis standing next to a clown and 2-3 small children. Mr. Lewis is wearing a suit with a vest and is looking toward the camera and smiling. Images 30b and 31b show a woman in a dress standing next to several paintings hanging on a wall. Aglow is an international Christian organization. Printed at intervals along one long edge of each of these strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM 5063."
