Description

MAD Festival, Unknown Dates. These five black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created from two separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show scenes from a Miss Thurston County pageant. Image 1a shows four women in dresses standing in a row. The woman second from the right has her mouth open in surprise and is holding hands with the women to each side of her. Image 2a shows the four women standing in a circle. Images 3a through 20a all show 3-6 women in dresses, some of whom are wearing tiaras and holding bouquets, standing in a group. Image 31a shows a woman in a long dress singing into a microphone. Image 32a shows the same woman turning to her left and holding up the microphone in her hand. Image 33a shows four women in dresses standing in a line. Images 34a and 35a are very similar to image 33a, but here five women are visible. The images in group "b" show musical performances and people dancing. Image 33b shows five men in military outfits performing as a band. Three of the men are singing into a microphone, one is playing acoustic guitar, and one is playing the violin. Image 34b shows a band playing made up of an acoustic guitarist, an upright bass player, a violin player, and a trombone player. Image 35b shows one man seated at a soundboard and two men standing behind him. Image 40b shows Johnny Lewis playing saxophone with his band on stage. Image 41b shows couples dancing on the dance floor. Image 42b shows a man playing a drum kit. Printed in alternation along one long edge of each of these strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM" and "KODAK TRI X PAN FILM."
