MAD Festival, Unknown Dates. These seven black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using at least two separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images.
The images in group "a" show Miss Thurston County contestants posing for group photos, and people standing on the sideline of a soccer field. Image 43a shows seven young women in dresses posing for a group photo. Six of the women are wearing sashes. There is a swimming pool visible behind the women. Images 44a and 1a are nearly identical to the previous image. Image 2a is very similar to the previous three images, but here the woman who was not wearing the a sash is not in the image. Image 3a shows six young women in swimsuits and sashes standing roughly in a line and looking toward the ground. A woman in a dress is standing and facing toward the women in swimsuits. Image 8a shows five Miss Thurston County contestants posing for a photo with Karen Fraser. Image 9a is effectively identical to the previous image. Image 10a is very similar to the previous two images, but two women who are not Karen Fraser are posing with the contestants. Images 11a and 12a show people standing on the sidelines of a soccer field. Images 14a through 18a show six contestants wearing dresses and sashes posing for photos with an older woman wearing a pant suit. The older woman is at the center of all these images.
The images in group "b" show people performing dances, spectators in the stands, bands performing, and Dick Pust speaking to a woman in a tiara. Images 3b and 4b show a woman and man performing a competitive dance of some kind. Images 8b and 9b show people in the stands. Image 16b is too underexposed to make out. Image 17b shows Johnny Lewis's band performing. Image 18b shows young woman performing a dance while Johnny Lewis's band plays in the background. Image 19b shows Johnny Lewis speaking into a microphone on stage. His band is behind him. Image 20b shows a woman in a grass skirt and a tall headdress performing a dance. Image 26b shows Dick Pust holding a microphone up to a woman's face. The woman is wearing a tiara and a long gown. Image 27b is effectively identical to the previous image.Made/Created
