American Locksmith, 1979. These six black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using two separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images.
The images in group "a" show one man (Philip Mortillaro) and four different women (one of whom is Pamela Mortillaro) in a locksmith shop. Image 18a shows a man on the left and a woman on the right facing away from the camera in the image foreground. Visible in between and beyond these two people is one woman facing toward the camera. The man and woman facing away from the camera (Philip and Pamela Mortillaro) are inside the shop, and the other woman is standing in the open doorway to outside. Image 19a is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 20a shows a woman not in the previous two images using a key cutting machine. Image 21a is effectively identical to the previous image. Image 22a shows the man from images 18a and 19a standing behind the service counter of the locksmith shop. He is turning to look back toward the camera. Image 23 shows the man and woman from images 18a and 19a behind the service counter. Both are facing away from the camera, and his right hand is held out in front of him. Image 24a shows the man speaking on a telephone. A woman not previously seen in these images is visible in the open doorway into the shop. Image 25a is very similar to the previous image, but here the woman in the doorway is not in the image. Image 26a shows the man and woman previously seen behind the service counter standing next to each other. The woman is laughing. Image 27a is similar to the previous image, but here the man is seated on a short stool and the woman is seated on a tall stool. Images 28a through 36a are effectively identical to image 27a.
The images in group "b" show the man and woman seen behind the counter in image group "a" still in the locksmith shop. The woman previously seen using the key cutting machine is also in these images. Image 34b shows the man and two women behind the counter. This image was taken from just outside the front door of the shop. Image 35b is nearly identical to the previous image. Images 36b through 38b are very similar to images 34b and 35b, but these images were captured from inside the shop. Image 40b shows a pegboard with man keys hanging on it. Image 41b and 42b show Pamela Mortillaro using a key cutting machine.
