Description

South Sound Center Carnival, 1973. These nine black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using three separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, the strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show carnival rides, some of which are still being set up (or perhaps taken down). Image 42a shows two men setting up a carnival ride. Image 43a shows a ferris wheel. Images 44a and 1a are effectively identical to image 43a. Image 2a shows the ferris wheel from the edge side. Image 3a shows two men moving pallets and a woman with three children near two tents. Image 4a shows a man in a football jersey standing amongst some tents. Image 5a shows one person standing on top of a partially-constructed carnival ride as two other people look on. Image 6a shows two men crouched down amongst some carnival rides. They appear to be putting something together. Images 7a through 9a are very similar to image 6a. Image 10a shows a ferris wheel in the background and a single seat from one of the other rides in the foreground. Image 11a shows carnival rides. Images 12a through 14a show a portion of the ferris wheel. Image 15a shows a ride made up of domed cups. Images 16a through 18a are nearly identical to image 15a. The images in group "b" show people at the carnival. Images 44b, 1b and 2b show people riding a carousel. Image 3b shows a group of girls standing together. Image 4b shows a boy playing a rifle-shooting game. Image 5b shows is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 16b shows people riding the carousel. Image 17b shows two women talking. Some children are walking around near the women. Image 18b is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 19b shows two children eating carnival food and looking toward the camera. Image 20b is nearly identical to the previous image. The images on group "c" show people at the carnival. Image 18c shows two children. The child on the right is eating cotton candy. The other child is looking toward the first. Images 19c through 21c show people waiting in line to get on a carnival ride. Images 22c and 23c show people riding a carnival ride which is shaped like an octopus. Images 40c through 44c and 1c show a man with a mustache holding a baby. Image 2c shows children waiting to get on a carnival ride. Image 3c shows two men and a woman working inside a portable kitchen/food truck. Printed in alternation along one long edge of each of these strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM" and "KODAK TRI X PAN FILM."
