Marathon Race, 1979. These seven black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using two separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images.
The images in group "a" show many people standing roughly in lines outside of the Capital Pavilion, and a large group of people participating in a marathon. Image 33a shows two people seated at a folding table outside of the Capital Pavilion on the Saint Martin's campus. Other people are standing on the opposite side of the table. The standing people are likely signing up for the marathon. Images 34a through 37a show other people in line and signing up at the table. Image 38a shows a person in a running suit stretching on a grassy area near a fairly large group of people standing around in running gear. Image 39a shows a wider shot of people standing around in running gear. Image 40a shows four people in running gear standing in a rough circle. Image 41a shows many people in running gear before the race. Images 42a through 44a show semi-aerial shots (likely captured from a window of one of the taller buildings on the Saint Martin's campus) of the runners standing around before the race. Images 1a through 8a show semi-aerial shots of the race underway. Images 9a and 10a show less elevated shots of the race underway. The Old Main building on the Saint Martin's campus can be seen on the left-hand sides of images 9a and 10a.
The images in group "b" show people at the end of the marathon. Images 32b and 33b show a large grassy area with several bushes and trees around the periphery. In image 33b, the Capital Pavilion is partially visible in the background on the left-hand side of the image. Image 34b shows two men walking toward the finish line of the marathon. Image 35b shows a man and a woman running. Image 36b shows a man placing or removing the runner number from another man's shirt. Image 37b shows a man exchanging some small item with a female runner. Image 38b shows tree men in running gear gathered around a small table. Image 39b shows a small group of runners standing around. The man at the center of the image is looking down at something held in his hands.Made/Created
