Description

Salmon Derby and White Cane Fundraiser, 1979. These four black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using two separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show people at the salmon derby and members of the Lions Club participating in a White Cane Day fundraiser. Image 16a shows a person in a row boat on a river. Image 17a shows a man preparing to weight a salmon. Image 18a shows the back of a man's head mostly obscuring the fish weight scale. Image 19a shows approximately 20 dead salmon on a table. Image 20a shows a small crowd watching the salmon weighing. Image 21a shows a small crowd of people standing together in a group. Image 30a shows a man in a plaid blazer affixing a white cane sticker or pin to another man's jacket. Another man in a blazer is standing next to a small folding table holding many of the white cane stickers/pins. Signage on the table shows that it is for a White Cane Day Fundraiser run by the Lion's Club. Images 32a through 33a show the two men in blazers speaking to people and placing the white cane pins/stickers on their jackets. Image 34a shows a wooded area alongside a highway. A sign reading "ORV SPORTS PARK" is visible alongside the road. The images in group "b" show four people, each holding a dead salmon, standing next to a sign showing the derby winners. Image 14b shows a man with glasses and a mustache wearing a jacket. Images 15b through 19b show three men and one woman each holding a dead salmon. A sign is partially visible behind them. The woman on the far left is Billy Zumbuhl. The man second from the right is Jim Bird. Images 20b and 21b both show only Billy Zumbuhl standing in front of the sign. The sign reads "OLYMPIA CHAPTER Northwest Steelhead and Salmon Club DERBY WINNERS." The names on the top 15 finishers in the derby are shown in order on the board. Billy Zumbuhl was the derby winner. The Olympia Chapter of the Northwest Steelhead and Salmon Club's fishing derby was held on May 6, 1979. (Advertisement, Olympian, 4/27/1979) White Cane Day is a fundraising event put on by the Lions Club to benefit people with visual impairments.
