Animal Shelter, 1979. These five black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using two separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images.
The images in group "a" show dogs in cages at the Thurston County Animal Control shelter. The cages are outdoors. Image 6a shows a dog in a cage having their chin scratched by a person's outstretched hand. Image 7a is very similar to the previous image, but here a second dog is standing next to the first. Images 8a through 11a are very similar to image 7a, but here the first dog has its front legs up on the side of the cage. Images 12a through 14 show a St. Bernard or similar dog in a cage. Images 15a through 17a show individual dogs in cages.
The images in group "b" show dogs in cages at the animal shelter, and a man working near the cages. Images 17b and 18b show two dogs together in a cage. Images 19b through 21b show two different dogs together in a cage. Image 22b shows a man standing at the open back end of a van. The side of the van reads "ANIMAL CONTROL." Image 23b shows the man walking past the cages. He is wearing an animal control uniform shirt which has "White" embroidered on the breast. Images 24b and 25b show the man spraying out one of the cages with a hose. Image 26b shows a partially wet dog. Image 27b shows two dogs in a cage. Images 28b and 29b show the same dog in a cage. Images 30b and 31b show two women working behind the front counter at the Animal Control shelter.Made/Created
