2007-012.Q598PDescription
James Allen Hoey Benefit Baseball Game, 1973. These four contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using two separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images.
The images in group "a" show a youth baseball game being played at Homann Park in Lacey, Washington. Images 24a-31a show the game being played. Images 32a and 33a show spectators at the game. The two teams playing are from Chinook Junior High and McKinley School.
The images in group "b" show a man with a megaphone, Girl Scouts with an American flag, and approximately twelve young boys standing in a line. Image 28b shows a man speaking into a megaphone. Image 29b shows three Girl Scouts walking across a field. One of the girls is carrying an American flag. Images 30b-32b show the three Girl Scouts standing with the flag. Images 33b and 34b show approximately twelve boys standing in a line. Some are holding their hands over their hearts.
The baseball game seen in these images was held as a fundraiser for James Allen Hoey, a seven-year-old boy from Lacey who was very severely injured after accidentally falling through a skylight at Chinook Junior High School. James Allen Hoey passed away as a result of his injuries before this benefit game took place.
