Football, 1973. These twenty black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using five separate film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to the film roll from which they originally came. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images.
The images in group "a" show five different young men in football uniforms posing for photos. It is not clear which team they are members of, as their uniforms have no text on them. These contact prints are labeled "Saint Martin's," but it is unclear if this is meant to reference Saint Martin's College or Saint Martin's High School. All of these images were captured in a large, open, field which is not lined. Images 40a and 41a show a young man holding his arms out as if preparing to catch a football. His jersey number may be 21, but his arms are obscuring the numbers which makes it difficult to tell. Images 42a and 43a show a young man wearing a jersey with the number 20 on it. He is shown from the mid-torso up. Images 44a and 1a show the same young man from images 42a and 43a, but here is holding a football under his right arm and kneeling on the ground. A football helmet is on the ground in front of him. Images 2a and 3a show a young man wearing a jersey with the number 32 on it. He is shown from the mid-torso up. Images 4a and 5a show the same young man from the previous two images standing in a two-point football stance. Image 6a shows a young man in a football jersey with the number 40 on it. He is shown from the mid-torso up. Image 7a shows the same young man as the previous image, but here his torso is oriented away from the camera and he is looking back over his left shoulder toward the camera. Images 8a and 9a show the same young man from the previous two images, but here his holding a football in his right hand and posing as if he is preparing to throw it. Images 17a and 18a show a young man wearing a jersey with the number 11 on it posing for photos. He is shown from the mid-torso up. Images 19a and 20a show the same young man from the previous two images in a two-point football stance.
The images in group "b" show players for both the Tumwater and Timberline High School football teams posing for portrait-style photos and action shots. Images 29b and 30b show a Tumwater player with jersey number 72 posing for portrait-style photos. Images 31b and 32b show the same player seen in the previous two images down in a three-point football stance. Images 33b and 34b show a different Tumwater player, whose jersey number is not visible, posing for portrait-style photos. Images 35b and 36b show a Timberline player posing for portrait-style photos. Images 37b and 38b show the young man from the previous two images preparing to catch a football. Image 39b shows another Timberline player posing for a portrait-style photo. Images 40b and 41b show the same young man as image 39b, but here he is kneeling on the ground and holding a football under his right arm. Image 42b shows another Timberline player posing for a portrait-style photo. Images 43b and 44b show the young man from image 42b in a three-point football stance. Image 1b shows a different Timberline player posing for a portrait-style photo. Image 2b shows the young man from the previous image in a two-point football stance. Images 3b and 4b show a different Timberline player posing for portrait-style photos. Images 5b through 7b show another football player preparing to catch and catching a football. He is turned mostly away from the camera, his last name is on the back of his jersey. It is only partially visible, but appears to begin with "BECKEN..."
The images in group "c" show Tumwater High School football players and coaches posing for photos. Images 21c and 22c show a Tumwater player wearing jersey number 11 posing for portrait-style photos. Images 23c and 24c show the same young man from the previous two images posing as through he were about to throw a football. Images 25c and 26c show a Tumwater player wearing jersey number 5 posing for portrait-style photos. Images 27c and 28c show the same player from the previous two images kneeling on the ground with a football tucked under his left arm. There is a football helmet on the ground in front of him. Images 29c and 30c show a Tumwater player wearing jersey number 56 in a two-point football stance. Images 31c through 33c show a different player posing for portrait-style photos. Images 34c through 36c show the player from the previous two images posing as through he is about to catch a football. Images 37c through 40c show a different Tumwater player posing for portrait-style photos. Images 41c and 42c show the player from the previous four images kneeling on the ground with a football tucked under his left arm. There is a football helmet on the ground in front of him. Images 43c, 44c and 1c show a man wearing a baseball cap and a polo shirt posing for portrait-style photos. There is a "T" on his hat, and "TUMWATER" can be partially seen on the shirt. This man is one of the team's coaches. Image 2c shows two people walking away from the camera.
The images in group "d" show one Timberline High School football player and four adult men, presumably coaches, posing for photos. Images 7d and 8d show the player posing for portrait-style photos. Images 9d-12d show the player preparing to catch a football. Images 13d-15d show an adult man with wavy hair and a whistle hanging around his neck posing for portrait-style photos. Images 16d and 17d show a man with a handlebar mustache and sharp sideburns and with a whistle hanging around his neck posing for portrait-style photos. Images 18d and 19d show a man with medium-length, wavy hair posing for portrait-style photos. Images 20d and 21d shows a man with straight hair posing for portrait-style photos.
The images in group "e" show a North Thurston High School football player posing for photos. His jersey number is 13. Image 33e shows the player kneeling on the ground with a football under his right arm. Image 34e shows the same player down in a four-point football stance.Made/Created
