Bowl carved by Greg Beck from Black Locust. Simple, smooth carved circle, showing the rings and knots of the tree. Just over 8 1/2" in diameter and 1/4" thick, bowl tapers at the bottom to a 4 1/2" diameter base. The base as viewed from the underside is comprised of four concentric circles. It is signed in black pen by the artist: "G. Beck #201 Locust 6-12".
Bowl was carved from the trunk of one of the Black Locust trees that once surrounded the Andrew J. Chambers homestead. These trees were brought across the Oregon Trail by the Chambers family. Roger Easton, a local historian, and Lacey Historical Commissioner felt very passionately that the trees be preserved. However, many of them were determined to be diseased and unable to be saved. The Thurston County Historical Commissioners had local woodcarving artist, Greg Beck, carve the bowl to present it to the Lacey Historical Commission and the Lacey Museum.Made/Created
