Description

There are six distinct sets of contact print strips in this sleeve with 14 separate contact print strips in total. The frame # field is not long enough to describe all the sets of prints for this heftily filled sleeve. The full account of frame numbers is listed below. a(10-23a), b(26-39a), c(31-33), d(44a-2), e(21a-34), f(43a-13) All of these photographs depict different attractions at the Olympia Capitol Lakefair festival of 1979. (Group a) Frame 10 shows a woman, facing the camera and smiling. She is wearing a dress, and holding flowers. Behind her are standing two men facing the camera, both are smiling. One of the men is Fred DeLore. His nametag is prominent in frame 14 which reads Fred DeLore President 1979. He is wearing a patch reading "Capitol Lakefair Capitalarian". To the right of the smiling woman is another woman smiling and playing a small stringed instrument. There is a prominent figure of a woman's back in the foreground. All of these people are standing on a floating pier, in front of what is now Heritage Park, on Capitol Lake. The Capitol Center building is visible in the background. There are many people in Heritage Park in the background. The day is overcast and bright. Frame 11-11a shows the woman from frame 10 facing a microphone and being crowned by a man's arm, the man's body is obscured by the woman and a large bouquet of flowers she is carrying. Fred DeLore is facing away from the camera towards the woman. Frame 12-12a Fred DeLore is embracing the woman while facing away from the camera, the woman is facing towards the camera and smiling. Frame 13-13a the woman from the previous frame is speaking into a microphone and appears to be addressing an audience, the two men from frame 10 are on either side of her facing the supposed audience. There are several microphones in front of her. Frame 14-14a shows Fred DeLore and the woman with linked arms posing for photographs, Fred is on the right and the woman is on the left. Frame 15- 15a is a zoomed out shot of Fred DeLore and the woman with Capitol Lake in the background. They are standing on a pier with an overturned potted plant in front of them. There is a large crowd on the shore of Heritage Park in the background. The back of two people's heads are obscuring the foreground, while framing Fred and the woman. Frame 16-16a in the foreground stands 3 figures, the man on the left is the man on the left of frame 10, the woman with the crown and flowers is in the middle, and Fred DeLore is on the right. Fred is holding a small bouquet at his waist. Behind them is a lectern with a man and a woman looking at some papers. Everyone is dressed in formal wear. They are all standing on the same pier mentioned earlier. Behind them is a crowd on the shore and the Capitol Center. Frame 17-17a is nearly the same as frame 14 but shot in a portrait orientation rather than a landscape orientation. Frame 18-18a The crowned woman is standing to the right of Fred and is now wearing a cape, in her left hand is a bouquet and in her right hand is a number of undiscernible items. There is one woman's back in the foreground and a man and woman in the background. In the background is the horizon of Southwest Capitol Lake. Frame 19-19a Fred DeLore and the woman are in the foreground, Fred on the left and the woman on the right. The two are facing each other and the woman's face is obscured by her hair. The faces of the many people in the background are almost all obscured. The horizon of Capitol Lake is in the background. Frames 20-23a are all identical skyline photos of Capitol Lakefair. The Capitol Center is in the frame as well as many carnival rides, including 3 Ferris wheels. The reflection of the skyline is visible on Capitol Lake in the foreground. (Group b) This group showcases portions of the 1979 Lakefair Parade. Frame 26-26a the back of a truck full of people dressed as clowns. Frame 27-27a Parade onlookers. Frame 28-28a Parade onlookers: a woman and two children. Frame 29-29a 3 clowns perform for the parade goers, one on a mini motorbike. Frame 30-30a 3 women ride atop a parade float with the name "Sedro-Woolley". The theme of the float is logging, with a large saw on the float. The number 59 is on the rear of the float. 31-31a a clown reaches out to a baby being held by a man (both are parade goers). Frame 32-34a a skateboarding half-pipe ramp is being pulled by a station wagon. The float is sponsored by Olympia Skateboard Park and the float reads "a growing sport for a growing nation". Young men skateboard on the moving ramp. 35-35a people carrying the flags of various nations. 36-38a Lacey International Arts and Dance Festival float. Frame 39-39a a parade float bearing a prominent cross, the lettering on the side is undiscernible, float number 83. There is a cub scout at the front of the float. (Group c) Frame 31 a longshot of a floating dock and stage/platform. The dock is empty but the platform is filled with people dressed in coordinated formal wear. There are microphones and potted flowers at the front of the stage and a sounding board at the rear of the stage. Frame 32 is similar to 31 but the dock is covered with men standing in a row all wearing matching suits. You can also see a swimming dock in the background complete with water slide. Frame 33 is a tightly packed audience, sitting in bleachers and on land on the shore of Capitol Lake. The Capitol Center building is visible in the background. (Group d) Frame 44a-1 and Frame 1a-2 are nearly identical photos of a band playing on a floating platform. The members of the band are all wearing identical uniforms which consist of a dark suit and garrison cap. The platform is being piloted by a motor boat on either side. The platform is in Capitol Lake and the forested horizon is in the background. (Group e) This group is comprised of photos of the 1979 Capitol Lakefair parade (photographed on Capitol Boulevard from the street-side of the Washington State Capitol Campus). Frame 21a-22 Parade Marshal Wayne Cody sitting atop a convertible. Frame 22a-23 Lakefair President Fred DeLore and his wife sitting in the rear seats of a convertible. Frame 23a-24 Mayor of Lacey Karen Frasier and Tim Malone sit atop a convertible. Frame 24a-25 an elaborate float carries the Lakefair Queen. The front of the float has a Nordic style canoe with a woman sitting inside. There are several other women sitting on the side of the float. Men in matching suits march on the sides of the float. The Capitol Boulevard walking bridge can be seen in the background. Frame 25a-26 shows a close-up of the Lakefair Queen atop her parade float. The sign beneath her reads "Capital Fantasy". Frames 26a-28 show a marching band dressed in traditional Scottish garb. Frame 28a-29 Parade goers look on at a bear mascot. Frame 29a-30 a parade float reading "Yakima" with a young woman wearing a crown atop it. The float is decorated with many animal and animal-like characters. The most prominent figure on the float is a bird at the front. There is a man wearing full western wear marching next to the float. Frame 30a-32 Denise Johansen "Miss Washington National Teenager" sits atop an old fashioned car. Frame 32a-33 two young men in cowboy hats man a wheel barrow that reads "our business is pickin' up". Frame 33a-34 parade goers sitting on the street-side. (Group f) This series of photos focuses on a Capitol Contemporary Theatre performance, or performances at the 1979 Capitol Lakefair in Olympia, WA. Frame 43a-44 Two children are in the foreground. The left child is painting the right child's face. Behind them, to the left, is a popcorn wagon with old fashioned spoked wheels advertising "Fresh Seasoned Popcorn". The contemporary theatre tent is behind them on the right. In the far background on the right, the Capitol Center building is visible, placing this event in Heritage Park. Frame 44a-1 A performer is sitting on the ground, facing away from the camera and applying makeup backstage. The props and costumes for the contemporary theatre are visible around them. Frame 1a-2 A child is standing center frame, performing in clown makeup, she is wearing a leotard and tights. She is standing in the grass with a theatre backdrop and trees behind her. Frame 2a-3 there is an audience of children in the close foreground, they are watching three performers. The left performer (P1) is holding a portfolio sized book and is wearing a large floppy hat, her dress is pleated and flowing, and she is wearing glasses, with a picnic basket in front of her. The middle performer (P2) is sitting on the ground, upright, in the fetal position. The right performer (P3) is wearing a long dress and is facing away from the camera. Frame 3a-4 the same performers from frame 2a-3 are all standing. P1 is to the left, P3 is in the middle, and p2 is on the right. The audience is more in frame in this negative, with small children and adults now visible, sitting in the grass. In the background is an empty bandstand and three people sitting on a stage. Frame 4a-5 there are 2 performers mid frame in an action shot. P2 is right and P3 is left. Behind them to the left are several people sitting on an empty stage. Behind the performers on their right are several adult and child audience members sitting in the grass. In the near foreground is the back of a child's head. Frame 5a-6 P1 is to the left, a new performer P4 wearing light colored pants, a light colored T-shirt and a large hat is in an action pose with P2 who is on the right (P2 and P4 are facing each other. An audience of small children and adults is in the foreground. Frame 6a-7 an actor wearing a cow costume (P4), an actor wearing a bird costume (P5), and P2 are all center frame. P4 and P5 appear to be chasing P2. The theatre backdrop is to their right and a popcorn cart is behind their right side. There are many people walking behind them on their left. P1 is at the very left of the frame. Frame 7a-8 There is an actor wearing a wolf mask/headpiece (P6) standing center frame with P2. The theatre backdrop is behind them and the audience is not visible. Frame 8a-9 P6 is reaching out and grabbing P2 while P2 is bent over facing them. They are both in the center of the frame. P5 is on the far right of the photograph appearing to be mid run, facing left towards P2 and P6. Behind them is the theatre backdrop and behind the backdrop, the Capitol Center building is visible. Only the back of a single child's head is visible in the bottom left corner of the frame. Frame 9a-10 All 4 animal character actors are surrounding P3 in center frame. P1 is on the very left of the frame and the audience of children is in the foreground. A theatre background is to the right of the frame and a popcorn cart is in the rear left of the frame. Frame 10a-11 P-6 wearing the wolf mask is left center of the frame, holding a basket and handing out something to an audience of children. Adults sit in the foreground. Frame 11a-12 Three actors are center frame, the actor to the left is wearing a baseball cap and kneeling on the ground, the middle actor is kneeling and bent over forward with their hair obscuring their face, arms outstretched. The actor to the right is a woman with shoulder length hair, sitting on the knee of the middle actor. A theatre backdrop is behind them and an audience of children is in the near foreground. Frame 12a-13 the negative is very similar to frame 11a-12 but it is shot in a landscape orientation instead of a portrait orientation. The middle actor instead of reaching outward and bending over is now sitting with an actor on each knee with his hands on their out shoulders.
