The third book in the Reading-Literature series. It contains folk tales and simple poems like its predecessors, and introduces fables and fairy stories. The reading content has been organized by material type so that the student may learn to associate related literature. The reading material and color illustrations are on pages 11 to 191. On the blank pages just inside the covers are pencil doodles reminiscent in shape to some of the illustrations.
On the blank page opposite the front cover are several inscriptions: "1918" is written in pencil in the top right corner; "Harry" is inscribed near the top and slightly to the right in pencil; below that is "Anne Martinsen", "Elk River Idaho.", "1916 1917 1918 1919" all in black ink. A stem of dried and pressed flowers and a clover were stuck between pages 20 and 21.
7.5" x 6" x 0.75". Hard-backed brown cover. At the top of the front cover in yellow ink outlined in brown ink is written "Reading-Literature". Just below that is a strip depicting a tortoise and a hare in grass, done in negative space with the brown ink background outlining creatures. In the middle is the title "Second Reader" above "Free and Treadwell" in the yellow bordered in brown, then just below that in brown is "Retail Price 40 Cents." Below the words is another illustrative strip depicting a witch on a broom with a crescent moon to her left and an owl in flight to her right, in the same negative pace style as the strip above. At the bottom of the cover in yellow bordered in brown is "Row, Peterson & Co." The spine has "Reading Literature - Second Reader in brown ink. The back cover has only a crest printed in the middle, depicting an open book with possibly an arrow pointing down through it and scroll work below and to the sides of the book.Lexicon
