"By the Shores of Silver Lake" is the fifth book in the "Little House on the Prairie" series written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Published in 1939 the book was awarded the Newbery Honor award for exceptional children's literature.
260 pages long, the book is broken down into 32 chapters with several black and white illustrations by Helen Sewell and Mildred Boyle.
Inside the front cover stamped in black ink is "Lacey Elementary School Library" with the majority of "Lacey Elementary" not being stamped entirely.
On the title page the same stamp has been marked in the middle of the page below the title, author and illustrator credits, and above the publishing information. Written in pencil just below the illustrator Mildred Boyle's last name is "C.2". Near the bottom left of the page running parallel to the binding in blue ink is hand written, "1478" followed in pencil by "C.2", and below those, but facing in the opposite direction is a white pice of paper that has been adhered to the page reading in black ink, "2466".
On page 260 at the bottom of page slightly left of center is stamped in black ink, "951-1125-664", and just below it is written in pencil, "70".
On the page opposite the back cover is a square of white paper adhered to the page with a black ink grid with "Due Date" at the top and "Cat. No 24 162 Printed in the U.S.A.". On the grid stamped in ink colors black, blue, red, and green are dates ranging from May '82 through possibly March '87. Over the stamps are several numbers written in pencil. Above the top right corner of the paper written in red ink is the number "19".
On the inside of the back cover at the top center is stamped in faded black ink "Lacey Elementary School Library". Just underneath that are two smeared fingerprints in red ink. In the top right corner in blue ink is stamped "Mar 9" though the year numbers are illegible. Adhered to the center of the inside cover is a Manila card sleeve. On the face of the sleeve is typed in blue ink "1478 coopy 2 F", and below that, "Wilder Wi", and below that, "By the Shores of Silver Lake".
Measuring 5" x 7.25" x 1", the book is a dark yellow color with the front and back cover being decorated in a repeating pattern of stylized floral crosses in an orange and brown color, with an orange line and a smaller brown line marking the end of the pattern just under an inch from the spine.
The spine is also bound in the dark yellow color. Impressed on the spine in black ink is the title "By the Shores of Silver Lake" above two horizontality stretched diamonds, and below that is "Wilder". Near the bottom on the spine in white ink is written "F" then below that, "Wi", then below that, "Cop 2".Lexicon
