Written by Thornton W. Burgess the book is 191 pages long, broken down into 23 chapters, with several black and white illustrations by Harrison Cady. The book was published as part of the Bedtime Story Books collection.
On the inside of the front cover at the top center is stamped in black ink, "Lacey Elementary School Library Lacey, Washington". On the page opposite the front cover at the top center is stamped in black ink "Lacey Elementary School Library North Thurston School Dist. #3 Lacey, Washington". Along the binding crease a white piece of paper has been adhered. Just below it running parallel to the binding written in partially erased pencil is "not realy" with a line underneath it.
On the title page at the top center is stamped in black ink, ""Lacey Elementary School Library Lacey, Washington". In the bottom right corner of the page stamped in black ink is, "Lacey Elementary School Library North Thurston School Dist. #3 Lacey, Washington". Near the bottom left of the page running parallel to the binding in pencil is written "704" and facing the opposite direction a white piece of paper has been adhered to the page with black typing "7415".
On the back of page 191 is stamped in blue ink "1395 1126 65", and just below that written in pencil is "71". On the opposite page written in blue ink is "Boring Book".
On page opposite the back cover is adhered a card sleeve with a card adhered inside it. On the face of the sleeve in black ink is typed, "704 F" then below that, "Burgess Bu", then below that, "Adventures of Sammy Jay". Below that is stamped in black ink, "Lacey Elementary School Library North Thurston School Dist. #3 Lacey, Washington". On the card is a grid in black ink with "Due Date" at the top. On the grid are dates ranging from Dec 13 '82 to Sep 15 '87 stamped in blue, red, black, purple, and green ink. Over the dates are written several numbers in pencil.
On the inside of the back cover at the top center is stamped in black ink "Lacey Elementary School Library Lacey, Washington", and below that stamped in black ink is "Lacey Elementary School Library North Thurston School Dist. #3 Lacey, Washington". Adhered near the bottom left parallel to the binding is a rectangular piece of white paper with rounded corners, the faint outlines of letters can be seen through the paper but cannot be discerned.
Measuring 5" x 7.5" x 1" the book is bound in a bright green cover and spine.
On the front cover stamped in black at the top center is the title, "The Adventures of Sammy Jay". Below that in the center of the cover in a combination of a light green and black ink is stamped image of a blue jay bird on a tree branch with his wings extended behind him. At the bottom center of the cover is stamped in black ink the author's name "Thornton W. Burgess".
On the spine is a stamped scroll outlined in black with the interior in a light green color, within the borders of the scroll in black ink is stamped "The Adven-tures of Sammy Jay" and below that the image of blue jay bird on a branch with his wings spread behind him, and below that, "Burgess". At the bottom of the spine in white ink is written, "F" over "Bu".
