Pollard's Synthetic Second ReaderEntry/Object ID
2001-007-0002Description
This educational book was authored by Rebecca Pollard, the originator of the synthetic method of teaching reading, also known as synthetic phonics. This is a method through which "Children are taught to read letters or groups of letters by saying the sound(s) they represent – so, they are taught that the letter l sounds like llllll when we say it. Children can then start to read words by blending (synthesising) the sounds together to make a word" (www.oxfordowl.co.uk). This reader was intended for use with other educational books by Pollard including spellers, and instructional materials for teachers. The Pollard method is no longer widely used in schools but remnants can still be seen when children are told to "sound it out" when learning to read.
On the inside of the front cover is written "Lizzy Lorengen 4702 Union Ave; South Tacoma; Wash." There are a few doodles on the pages of the book and the inside of the back cover has a few words and mathematical problems below them.
