The Tyee was founded in 1958 and expanded in 1960 to include a dining area; it served as an off-campus meeting location for legislators, staff and lobbyists. In 1970 a major fire shutdown most of the motel and, with the death of one of the owners, instigated a sale. In January 1972 the Tyee re-opened under new management.
