Thurston County Fair, 1979. Black and white strips of 91 photographs (one strip of three frames, three strips of four frames, three strips of five frames, and ten strips of six frames) originally taken for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show various parts of the Thurston County fair.
The strip containing frames 3-8: Frame3 shows three cows in a line with a person standing in front of them. It appears that they are being judged. Frame 4 shows 3 cows standing on the left, middle, and right side of the photograph. There is a person standing in front of each cow. Frame 5 shows the three cows again and each person standing in front of them appears to be examining them before they are judged. Frame 6 shows three women sitting around a table and appear to be eating. The one to the left of the photo has short hair and a white shirt on, and her back is to the camera. In the middle of the photograph is a woman with short hair, glasses, and a checkered shirt on. To the right is a woman with short dark hair, a patterned shirt and glasses. There appears to be tupper wear and plates on the table. Frames 7 and 8 show a cow standing with a person in front of it. It appears that the cow is being judged. In frame 8 you are able to tell that a woman is standing in front of the cow with a long white dress on. The strip containing frames 8-13: This strip shows people milking cows into buckets. In frames 8 and 9 you see a woman in a light shirt and dark pants milking a light cow. The woman is sitting back to back with a man in a flannel shirt. There is a cow between them and a person standing near that cow. Frames 10 and 11 show a man milking a cow in a light shirt and pants with a light hat on. Standing over him is another person in a light shirt and light pants with curly short hair. Frame 12 shows someone in a plaid shirt and dark jeans squatting down and milking a cow. Frame 13 shows someone kneeling down next to a cow milking it. This person is wearing dark pants and a light shirt. There is a person standing near the head of this cow with long hair and a "WSU" sweat shirt on. The second strip containing frames 8-13: Frame 8 shows at least four children and an adult standing behind them. There is a young girl standing over a bunny that is on a hay bail. A toddler is in a stroller also looking at the bunny. Frame 9 shows the same children but now the girl has her hands by her side and the toddler in the stroller is reaching out and petting the bunny. In frame 10 a young boy in a striped shirt has come up next to the stroller and is petting the bunny. The girl with braided hair is still sitting on the opposite side of the hay bail. Frame 11 shows a banner with the image of a horse on it and the words "Horse Barn" written under it. Frame 12 shows the same banner but from further away, and you are now able to see that the banner is on the side of horse stalls. There appear to be horses eating out of a trough. Frame 13 shows a figure looking into an oven, possibly watching a pie bake. The person has on a light colored shirt, a hat, and blue jean pants. Behind them is a counter. Behind them are two more children looking at them. The girl has braided hair and the toddler has on a striped shirt. The strip containing frames 9-14: Frame 9 shows a line of people standing next to young cows. The people are holding ropes tied to a harness on the cows. Closest to the camera is someone wearing all light clothing, and the cow appears to be brown. Frames 10 and 11 show a girl standing in front of a cow and she appears to be showing it for the photo. Behind them is a large pile of hay bails stacked. Frames 12 and 13 show a young woman in a striped shirt standing behind a counter indoors. In front of her on the counter appears to be a pie. Frame 14 shows what appears to be the inside of a barn. Wooden posts attached to the roof are visible. There are wooden planks holding up the roof. The strip containing frames 14-19: Frame 14 shows a man in a long sleeved shirt, dark jeans, and a hat milking a cow. People stand behind him watching. Frame 15 shows a crowd of people standing around what appears to be a scale while a man weighs a bucket filled by the cow's milk. The man is wearing glasses and a long sleeved shirt. Frame 16 shows a group of people, three men and two children. The man to the left of the photograph is wearing a jacket and has his right hand on the shoulder of a child in front of him. A second man stands in the middle of the photograph in a light shirt, next to him is a man in a striped shirt and sunglasses holding a child who is wearing a light shirt and striped pants. Frames 17 and 18 show a man in a light shirt and light pants milking a light colored cow. There are people standing on both sides of the cow watching the man milk it. Frame 19 shows a man in a light shirt with the sleeves rolled up, and dark pants, milking a cow. To the left of the photograph the head of a cow is visible and it appears to be getting milked also. The strip containing frames 13-18: Frame 13 shows a woman standing in an office talking on a phone. Someone is seated next to her. Frames 14-17 show a woman in a dark sweater and dark shirt seated at a desk. Frames 14 and 15 show her talking on the phone and frames 16 and 17 show her smiling at the camera. Frame 18 shows a sign hanging over a road that reads "Thurston County Fair August 2 3 4 5." The strip containing frames 19-24: Frames 19 and 20 are of the same banner advertising the Thurston County Fair. Frames 21-24 show two women standing at a counter signing paperwork that is in front of them. One woman is wearing a dark sweater and a shirt and the other woman is wearing a light shirt. They appear to be in an office. In frame 22 they are both looking at the camera but in frames 21, and 23-24 they are looking at the papers on the counter. The strip containing frames 14-19: Frame 14 shows a young child holding a rope that is attached to a young cow. Frame 15 shows a young child holding the rope attached to a young cow and the child is looking closely at the cow's face. Frame 16 shows a woman standing and holding a baby. There are several other people around her. The baby appears to be looking at the camera. frames 17 and 18 show the back of a t-shirt that reads "I'm a Country Cuzzin." Frame 19 shows a woman in a checkered shirt and striped apron cooking in a pot on a stove. next to her is a counter, and on the other side is a fridge that has "Olympia Appliance Center" written on it. The strip containing frames 15-20: Frame 15 shows a child kneeled down on the ground looking through wooden planks at what appears to be an animal in a pen. Frame 16 shows a man standing in a light shirt, light pants, and dark jacket. His hands appear to be in his pockets and he is wearing an oversize tie that reads "here comes the bull" and shows a bull with a nose ring on it. There is another man standing next to him that the appears to be talking to. Frame 17 shows a line of people standing outside a barn with cows in front of them. The people appear to be petting the cows and the cows appear to be eating the grass around them. Frame 18 shows women standing in a large crowd with buckets that people are reaching in to. One woman, to the left of the photograph, is smiling at the camera. A woman next to her is holding out a bucket that has "water" written on it, and another woman is reaching in to it. A third woman is standing in the photograph and is also holding a bucket that has flowers on it. There is a large group of people in the background. Frame 19 shows two large cows standing next to each other. There are at least 15 people around the cows looking at them. Two people are standing and touching the cow on the left of the image and a man is taking a photograph of the cow on the right. Frame 20 shows a cow being milked. There is a man in a striped shirt and dark pants to the left of the cow, and another man in light pants and a light shirt, squatted down milking the cow on the right side. There is a third person in a dark jacket bending over behind the person milking.
The strip containing frames 15-19: Frames 15-18 show two men standing next to what appears to be wooden bleachers. The an on the left is wearing a plaid shirt and a hat with a logo on the front and the man on the right is wearing a dark colored shirt. In frame 19 two other men are standing to the right of the frame behind the tallest portion of the bleachers. Both are wearing baseball caps and have their back to the camera. The strip containing frames 20-24: Frames 20 and 21 show the same image of the four men standing by the bleachers from frame 19. Frame 22 shows a stable with the image of a horse on the side of it. Behind it are trees in the background. Frame 23 shows a man holding something against a wall. He has on a short sleeved light shirt, dark pants, and has a beard. Frame 24 shows the same man but the photo appears to have been taken from within a stall. The strip containing frames 20-25: Frames 20-22 appear to be someone milking a goat. Frame 20 show someone bent down next to the goat milking it while another person holds on to a collar around it's neck while it eats out of a bowl on the ground. The person squatted down is wearing a light shirt and jeans. The person standing is wearing a light shirt and light pants. In the background people are seen taking photographs and laughing. Frames 21 and 22 show the same people milking the goat but this image is taken from the back of the goat. More people are seen in the background taking photographs. Frame 23 shows what appears to be a fire fighter in a uniform of a white button up shirt and dark pants, serving food off of a counter. There appear to be lines behind him as well as on the other side of the counter. Frame 24 shows four people standing outside of a building with a table in front of them, possibly with food on it. Frame 25 shows the same man from frame 23 serving food out of a large pan and another man is standing next to him with his arms by his side. The strip containing frames 20-23: Frames 20 and 21 show a woman in a checkered shirt, a striped apron, a hat, and glasses. She is cutting something with a large knife. She appears to be in a kitchen as there are cabinets next to her. Frame 22 shows five people standing near a fence and each person has a dog in front of them on a leash. the dog all the way to the left is standing but the rest are sitting next to the person holding their leash. Frame 23 shows a woman leading a dog over a wooden obstacle and the dog is jumping.
The strip containing frames 21-25: These images all show a cow milking competition. Frame 21 shows someone seated on the right side of a cow milking it. Frame 22 shows a man kneeled down on the left side of a cow milking it. Frame 23 shows someone seated on the right side of a cow milking it and there is a cow on each side of the cow that is being milked. Frame 24 shows two people sitting back to back milking cows. Frame 25 shows a bucket being weighed on a scale. The strip containing frames 24-26 shows a man in dark pants and a light shirt leading a dog over a barricade. In frame 24 the dog is jumping over the obstacle. Frame 25 shows the dog almost over the obstacle. Frame 26 shows the man and the dog both behind the obstacle and the dog is jumping over. The strip containing frames 26-29: Frames 26 and 27 show a large crowd with people talking to each other. Children are visible in both frames. Frame 28 shows a woman in a light jacket and dark pants with a young boy standing next to her. The woman is holding a bucket that says "Lacey Leader: on it. Frame 29 shows the same woman but the boy is no longer there. The strip containing frames 25-28: Frames 25 and 26 show two people sitting down and leaning over a large box. They appear to be writing something. Behind them is a table that has items piled on it. In frame 27 the same two people are seated in front of the large box but now a third person is standing next to the box and is leaned over handling something on top of it. Frame 28 shows a woman with brown hair and a light jacket and light shirt writing something on a counter. There are papers around her on the counter and behind her appear to be filing boxes.
