South Bay School, unknown date. These three black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. One of the strips bears five images (images 20-24), one of the strips bears four images (images 25-28), and one of the strips bears three images (images 29-31). All three of these film negative strips show a number of children participating in a bike course at a playground with at least three adult male supervisors on a rainy day. Image 20 shows a child on a bike with a basket on the front. There is a flower design on the basket. An adult male with a beard watches from the left-hand side of the frame and several children on bikes are in the background. Image 21 shows a female child sitting on a bike and looking to her right as an adult male in a state patrol-style hat watches from the background. Image 22 shows a child wearing a hood riding a bike in the direction of an octagonal sign as the bearded man looks on. Image 23 shows a person in a poncho facing away from the camera in the foreground. There are two children riding bikes in the background. Image 24 shows a child riding a bike between two curving lines. Image 25 shows a child in a hood and wearing glasses riding a bike toward the camera. There is a small sign on the front of the bike bearing the number "5" and some unreadable text. Image 26 shows the same child as in image 25 sitting on a bike and oriented toward an octagonal sign. The man in the state patrol-style hat and the person in the poncho are watching the child. Image 27 shows the man in the state patrol-style hat leaning over and speaking to a male child who is standing next to his bike. A female child standing next to a bike is in the background. Image 28 shows an adult male with glasses and no hat looking down and writing something on a tablet while speaking to a child with long hair who is holding their bike up and looking away from the camera. Two other children are in the background, and a third is only partially in the frame at right. Image 29 shows a male child riding his bike through a set of lines in the figure of the number 8. There is a sign on the front of his bike with the number 43 and the letters "KMX" on it. An adult with a hood on and holding an umbrella watches from the left of the frame and the man with the beard is entering the frame from the right in the background. Image 30 shows the man in the beard putting his arm on the shoulder of a male child sitting on a bike as they speak. Immediately in front of both people is an octagonal sign. Image 31 shows the man in the state patrol hat leaning over and pointing to his right while five children in bikes are in line to his left.
The images show a "Bike Rodeo," a youth event put on by the Lacey Police Department which consisted of a bicycle obstacle course and bicycle inspections performed by officers. Ken Balsley noted that the officers would license bicycles which passed their inspections.Made/Created
