Arden's TV, 1973. These four black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. Two strips bear three images each (images 20-22 and images 28-30) and the two other strips bear five images each (images 31-35 and 36-40). The images show the exterior of the Arden's TV store as well as interior shots of the sales floor showing televisions, furniture, and home appliances. Image 20 shows the exterior of the Arden's TV store from a diagonal angle and a van parked in front of the store. There is a sign reading "Arden's TV" above the building at the far right, and printed on the van is "Arden's TV," "RCA Admiral," "4331 Lacey Blvd," and "Ph. 491-3617." Image 21 is virtually identical to image 20. Image 22 is similar to images 20 and 21, but the picture is taken from closer to the van and from an angle closer to straight-on in relation to the front of the store than images 20 or 21. Image 28 shows the sales floor of the Arden's TV store. In the left-hand foreground are several cabinets, in the left middle ground and background are couches and lamps. In the right-hand foreground are a large number of televisions. At the center background are recliners. Image 29 is similar to image 28, but the image was captured with the camera situated several feet to the left of that in image 28. The image frame has also panned further to the right. Image 30 shows the sales floor again, but the fore- and middle ground are filled with televisions, while couches, lamps, and recliners are visible in the background. Image 31 shows the sales floor again, this time with a line of televisions perpendicular to the picture plane. Image 32 shows the sales floor again, but this time with televisions dominating the fore- and middle ground. Image 33 shows a very similar image as images 32, but the photographer has backed up or zoomed out slightly. Image 34 shows the sales floor again, but with a coffee table and two couches in the foregound. One lamp sitting on an end table is at center in the middle ground. Image 35 shows the sales floor with the photographer standing with one of the walls very near to his or her left. In the middle ground are two couches, two end tables, two lamps, and one coffee table. Image 36 shows a large grouping of televisions at the center middle-and backgrounds. Recliners are visible in the left-hand background, and the tops of two cabiners are visible at the bottom of the frame. Image 37 shows several cabinets in the foreground with televisions to the right. Couches are in the left background and recliners are at center background. Image 38 shows approximately 20 laundry washing machines in the foreground with refrigerators against the wall of the store at the background. Image 39 shows a very similar scene to image 38, but the image frame has changed from horizontal to vertical so as to make more of the closest laundry washing machines included in the frame. Image 40 shows several clothes dryers in the foreground and refrigerators in the left-hand background.
Arden's TV was owned by Arden Derring, and was located near the intersection of Pacific Avenue and Sleater Kinney Road in Lacey, Washington. Ken Balsley noted that Mr. Derring and his sons later went on to form a construction company.
Printed in alternation along one edge of all of these film negative strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM" and "KODAK TRI X PAN FILM."Made/Created
