Description

Panorama City Art Show, 1973. These eight contact print strips strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. Four strips bear five images each (images 1-5, 6-10, 4-8, and 40-44), two strips bear four images each (images 9-12 and 17-20) and two strips bear three images each (images 1-3 and 21-23). More than one roll of film was used when originally capturing these images, so there are two different images physically numbered with the numerals 1 through 10. For the purposes of this description, the first set of images to be described with the numbers 1 through 10 will be designated as 1A through 10A, and the second set of images to be discussed with the numbers 1 through 10 will be designated as 1B through 10B. All of these images show various images of art pieces or individuals either posing with or looking at a number of displays of various arts and crafts pieces. Image 1A shows a grandfather clock. Image 2A shows a seated man (Carl Syring) in glasses and a blazer looking into a case holding mineral samples and jewelry. This image was captured from roughly in front of Mr. Syring. Image 3A shows the same scene, but the image was captured from the man's left side. Image 4A shows a very similar image to that of image 3A, but in image 4A the man is turned slightly more away from the camera. Image 5A shows the same man seated in front of a different display case. This display case holds a number of smaller cases inside of it. At least two of the inner cases have a label reading, in part, "Bob Knoll." There is also a roughly obelisk-shaped inner case with a label reading "Lee Durbin." Image 6A shows the same man seated in front of yet another display case. This display case has a sign mounted to it which is partially visible and reads "ROCKHOU." Image 7A shows a very similar scene to image 6A, but more of the sign is visible, showing that it reads "ROCKHOUND." Image 8A shows the same scene, but the camera has moved behind Mr. Syring's head. The entire sign is visible in this image, showing that it reads "ROCKHOUNDS." Image 9A is very similar to image 8A, but the frame orientation has rotated 90 degrees clockwise, and a portion of Mr. Syring's hand is visible. Image 10A shows a man (Verner Carlson) in glasses and a sweater looking downward and reaching out to touch a grandfather clock. Image 17 shows Mr. Carlson reaching up and touching the face or hands of the clock. Image 18 shows a very similar scene, but the image frame has rotated 90 degrees clockwise, and there is an art piece with a floral design visible to the man's left. Image 19 shows a similar scene to the previous two, but the photographer has either zoomed out or backed up, making most of the man's legs visible in the image frame. Image 20 is very similar to the previous three images, but the frame is more close-up to the man, showing him only from the shoulderblades up. Image 21 shows an almost identical scene to image 20, but the fingers of the man's left hand are more straightened than in image 20. Image 22 shows two unidentified women in dresses and jackets, one seated at a table, talking. There are purses and/or tote bags on the table. Image 23 shows the same two women, and the same one seated at the table. The second woman is in the foreground and turned away from the camera. Image 1B shows a seated unidentified woman knitting in front of a sign which reads "NEEDLEWORK." Image 2B is very similar to image 1B, but the woman's head is turned slightly more to her right. Image 3B shows a man (Monroe Shenkel) in glasses and a blazer seated next to and looking at a wooden cabinet or coffee table. On top of the cabinet or table is a sign which reads "Monroe Shenkel, March 1973," or something very similar. Image 4B shows an almost identical image to image 3B, but there is a woman walking out the frame to the left. Image 5B shows a man (Walter A. Heath) in glasses and a sweater looking at and touching a rug mounted on a display. Image 6B shows a very similar scene to image 5B, but the image frame is rotated 90 degrees clockwise and the man is facing in a more downward direction. Image 7B again shows the same man in a very similar pose, but the image frame is rotated back to its original position and both of his shoes are visible. Image 8B shows again a very similar scene, but the photographer has moved slightly to his right. Image 9B shows a man and a woman, both wearing glasses, looking at a variety of cermaic vessels laid out on a table with labels. The labels are not readable. Image 10B shows a very similar scene, but the image frame has rotated 90 degrees clockwise and a white robe or cape is hanging on the wall. Image 11 shows the same two people looking at a similar display, but the image was captured from between and behind the two people. Image 12 shows the same scene, but the photographer has either zoomed out or backed away. Image 40 shows a woman (Joyce Kundle) in a dress wearing a brooch and unreadable nametag posing with a decorative stand holding decorative glasswork. Image 41 shows the same scene, but the photographer has either zoomed in or moved closer to the subject. Image 42 shows an almost identical image to 41, but the camera has inclined slightly, making more of a square feature in the ceiling visible. Image 43 shows the same woman posing with the same glasswork, but here she is leaning in toward the glasswork. Image 44 shows the same grandfather clock from image 1A, but the photographer has either zoomed out or moved away the clock. (Lacey Leader, 5/2/1973, pg. 5)
