Mad Fest, 1973. These three contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. Two strips bear four images each (images 36-39 and 43,44,1, and 2) and one strip holds three images (images 40-42). These images show a celebration, including performances, in Saint Martin's University's Marcus Pavilion. Image 36 shows two clowns standing next to eachother holding balloons. Image 37 shows an area of open basketball court with a portion of a temporary stage at the right side of the frame and a portion of the audience in attendance at the left side of the frame. Image 38 shows a barbershop quartet. Image 39 shows a very similar scene as image 38. Image 40 shows approximately 40 people, almost exclusively women and girls, sitting in the stands. Image 41 shows the same group of people from the same angle, but most of the people are standing. Image 42 shows two balloons in the foreground and the temporary stage in the background. Several clowns and a person playing guitar are standing on or near the stage. Image 43 shows a very similar scene to image 42, but the photographer has zoomed out or backed up slightly. Image 44 is nearly identical to image 43. Image 1 shows a scene very similar to image 40. Image 2 shows a scene very similar to images 40 and 1.
"MAD" stands for Music, Art and Dance. Ken Balsley noted that that the annual Lacey music festival was not called the MAD Festival until 1975 or 1976, and at the time these images were captured it was referred to as the Lacey Music Festival.Made/Created
