Unidentified people, unknown dates. These twenty film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. Three of the strips bear six images, sixteen of the strips bear five images, and one strip bears one image. In light of the large number of negatives in this sleeve, many of which bear the same physical number, these negatives will be divided and categorized by their subject matter, and each category within this sleeve will use its own discrete series of numbers. Seven of these strips show the preparation and flight of a hot air balloon and a hang glider. The images within this category include images 2-16, 24-44, and 1. Image 2 shows one man preparing another man to pilot a hang glider. The pilot of the hang glider is strapped into the triangular control frame, and a child watches from the left side of the frame. Image 3 shows a number of adults manipulating a deflated hot air balloon. An industrial fan on a wheeled cart and the hot air balloon's basket are visible at the center and left of the frame, respectively. Image 4 shows several adults inflating the hot air balloon. The number "5702" is visible on the balloon at the center of the frame. An adult wearing a harness is visible toward the left of the frame climbing over or into the hot air balloon's basket. Image 5 shows one man and one woman working to inflate the hot air balloon as ten other adults watch or converse with eachother. The hang glider is visible at the left of the frame. Image 6 shows a man working to inflate the hot air balloon. The man's face, left arm, and a portion of his torso are visible, as is a portion of the industrial fan. Image 7 shows a man in a helmet and harness standing and strapped into the hang glider. Toward the left of the frame are four individuals holding onto the hot air balloon as it begins to ascend. Image 8 shows five adults around the basket of the inflated hot air balloon. One woman is sitting on the edge of the basket, and it appears that one man is as well. The other three adults are standing. Image 9 is upward-oriented image of the inside of the hot air balloon. Image 10 shows the two burners of the hot air balloon. Image 11 shows several adults in the basket of the hot air balloon. The hot air balloon is still grounded. Image 12 shows at least two adults in the basket of the hot air balloon as it begins to ascend. In this image, it appears that the basket is only 6-10 feet off the ground. Image 13 shows the hot air balloon from below as it continues to ascend. Image 14 shows the hang glider in flight from a nearly straight-on view. The bottom of the control frame appears to be approximately 12 feet off the ground. Image 15 shows both the hot air balloon and hang glider in flight from below. The two aircraft occupy the majority of the photo frame. Image 16 again shows the hot air balloon and hang glider in flight from below, but the photographer has either zoomed out or the aircraft have ascended to a greater height. Image 24 shows a street scene with the hot air balloon visible in the very far background. A building with an accompanying sign reading "Oroweat" is visible at the left of the frame. Image 25 shows the hot air balloon flying in the far distance. No other objects are visible in this image. The balloon is centered in the frame. Image 26 shows the hot air balloon in flight. Also visible in the image are a road, trees, and power lines. Image 27 shows the hot air balloon in flight in the distance. No other objects are visible in the image. Image 28 shows the hot air balloon in flight. The top of a tree is visible at bottom left. Image 29 shows the hot air balloon back on the ground in a grassy field with brush. Several adults are gathered around and/or approaching the hot air balloon. Image 30 shows the hot air balloon again in flight, but now it is tethered to the ground. A man on the ground is holding onto the rope tethering the hot air balloon. Image 31 shows the hot air balloon in flight, with a rope descending down away from it and out of the frame. Image 32 shows the hot air balloon still in flight, but here the rope is extending out toward the right of thre frame. Image 33 shows approximately ten individuals gathered around the hot air balloon, which is laying on its side. An individual with glasses and wavy hair is looking toward the camera in the close foreground. Image 34 shows a larger group of people gathered around the grounded hot air balloon. An adult in a striped poncho or poncho-like garment is in the center-left foreground. Image 35 shows the balloon on the ground with a large number of children gathered in the fore- and middle ground. Several adults stand in the background. Image 36 shows a very similar scene to that of image 35, but shows two young girls pushing on the balloon in the middle ground while a third pushes on it further away from the camera. Image 37 shows a large group gathered around the grounded balloon. A portion of the balloon's basket is visble at the bottom right of the frame. Image 38 shows a group of individuals gathered around the mostly-deflated balloon. Several of the individuals are pushing on the balloon, and appear to be attempting to force the air out of it. Image 39 shows a group of people gathered around the basket and entirely deflated balloon. One man is rolling or folding up the balloon while three others work with the basket. Image 40 shows five adults loading the basket onto a trailer. Image 41 shows a man breaking down the hang glider. Image 42 shows several adults continuing to break down the hot air balloon and/or hang glider. Two people at the center of the image are working on a portion of folding frame with four legs. Image 43 shows a man securing the folded hang glider with belt-type straps. Image 44 shows two men working with the hot air balloon's burners. Image 45 shows eight individuals coiling the ropes from the hot air balloon. Four of these film negative strips show what appears to be an awards or induction ceremony. The images within this category include images 4-24. Image 4 shows a man in a jacket and bowtie leaning over and manipulating a device that may be some sort of radio or television. Visible on the side of the device is "Ex. Antenna." Image 5 shows a very similar scene to that of image 4, but the man is leaning further to his right and pointing at or touching a part of the device near the "Ex. Antenna" label. Image 6 shows the man in the jacket and bowtie seated on a bench and speaking to a standing woman. The woman is also touching the man's shoulder. Image 7 shows the man in the jacket and bowtie seated on a bench and reading something. In the background is another man wearing a cap and holding a serving or ceremonial vessel. Several bottles of liquor are visible in a cabinet in front of the man holding the vessel. Image 8 shows the man in the jacket and bowtie standing and reading something. There is a seated woman in a dress facing away from the camera in the near foreground. Image 9 shows the seated woman, but she is now in the background and facing the camera. The man in the jacket and bowtie is in the near foreground and facing away from the camera. Image 10 shows the man in the jacket and bowtie speaking to a woman wearing a bandana and holding a book. The woman's head is tipped to her right. Image 11 shows a very similar scene to image 10, but the woman's head is tipped to her left. Image 12 shows the man in the jacket and bowtie standing and speaking to the woman in the bandana and the woman in the dress, both of whom are seated. Image 13 shows the man again speaking to the two women, but now the woman in the bandana is lying down on a bench with no shoes on. Image 14 shows the man in the cap standing behind the cabinet with liquor bottles on it. Image 15 shows the man in the jacket and bowtie standing and looking toward the camera as the man in the cap sits on a bench. Image 16 shows a man with sideburns seated and leaning on a table while holding out four fingers. The woman in the dress is seated on the table and looking toward the man. Image 17 shows the man with sideburns in profile and facing the man in the jacket and bowtie. The man in the jacket and bowties is looking toward the camera. Image 18 shows the man with sideburns and the man in the jacket and bowtire speaking to eachother at the right of the frame while a man in a tuxedo watches from the left of the frame. Image 19 shows the man with sideburns leaning forward slightly and facing the man in the tuxedo, who is seated. The man in the jacket and bowtie is seated and watching, while the woman in a dress and a woman with longer hair converse in the background. Image 20 shows the man with sideburns speaking with the woman with longer hair. Image 21 shows the man with the cap holding a pillow with a medal on a neck strap on it. Next to the man in the cap is a second man with a beard and ceremonial cords around both of his shoulders speaking and gesturing with his hands. Image 22 shows the bearded man placing the medal around the neck of the woman in a dress. Image 23 shows the man with a beard facing away from the camera in the foreground and the man in the jacket and bowtie looking down at a medal hung around his neck. Image 24 shows the man with a beard reading from a book or pamphlet as the man in the jacket and bowtie looks on. Two of these film negative strips show a celebration event for the Lacey Police Sirens, which appears to have been a youth football team. The images in this category include images 5-14. Image 5 shows a man with a mustache surrounded by male children. The man appears to be signing autographs. Image 6 shows the man with a mustache seated at a table and surrounded by male children and one woman. Image 7 shows the man with a mustache holding a baby and posing for a photo. Image 8 shows a cake with cheerleaders and football players drawn in icing. The cake also reads "Lacey Police Sirens, 1980 Champs." Image 9 shows five female children and one adult individual in cheerleading uniforms. Image 10 shows the man with a mustache presenting a trophy to a male child. A table with more trophies is visible in the background. Image 11 shows the man with a mustache presenting a larger trophy to a different male child. Image 23 shows the man with a mustache speaking into a microphone. A portion of a bingo board is visible on the wall behind him,. Image 13 shows a very similar scene to that shown in image 12, but the man's eyes are closed or nearly closed. Image 14 again shows a similar scene, but now the man is turned toward his right. Three of these film negative strips show a man driving an amphibious car, a man in a Washington National Guard uniform, and five men posing for a photo. The images in this category included images 18-32. Image 13 shows a man driving an amphibious car off of a boat launch and into the water. The front tires are partially submerged. Image 14 shows the car further into the water. Both sets of tires are partially submerged. Image 15 shows the car floating on the water from a rear diagonal perspective. Image 16 shows the car floating, but now from straight-on to the driver's side of the car. Image 17 shows the car floating, but now from a slightly front diagonal perspective. Image 18 shows a similar scene to image 17, but the perspective has shifted over to the front of the car slightly. Image 19 shows the car roughly from a side-on virew, and the driver's arm is resting on the door. Image 20 shows a similar scene to that of image 19, but the photographer has zoomed in. Image 21 is again similar, but the man is facing forward and a considerable wake is extending from the rear of the car. Image 22 shows the man in the car looking toward the camera and lifitng his hand from the steering wheel. Image 23 shows the car from a nearly front-on view. Image 24 shows a similar scene to image 23, but from a more diagonal angle. A considerable wake is extending from behind the car. Image 25 shows the car driving back up onto the boat launch. Image 26 also shows the car driving up onto the boat launch, but the photographer has either stepped back or zoomed out. Image 27 shows a man in a Washington National Guard uniform. His name badge reads "Washintong National Guard, Raynaldo Soto." Images 28 and 29 are virtually identical to image 27. Image 30 shows five men standing in line and posing for a photograph. Images 31 and 32 are virtually identical to image 30. One of these film negative strips shows a bearded man in an office speaking on a telephone. The images in this category include images 5-10. Image 5 shows the man holding the phone handset to his ear and dialing the phone. Image 6 shows the man looking downward with the phone to his ear. Image 7 shows the man with the phone still to his ear, but he is now faced more toward the camera. Visible on the wall behind the man is text which reads "Part Time Job Wall" and a sign which reads "Crisis Clinic." Image 8 shows the man reaching for the phone handset, which is on the phone cradle. Image 9 shows the man in profile with the phone to his ear. He is reaching toward the phone cradle. Image 10 shows the man with the phone to his ear and a piece of paper in his hand. One of these film negative strips shows four men participating in what appears to be a drinking contest or ritual. One man and one woman are officiating. The images in this series include images 40-44. Image 40 shows a woman with a scarf on her head holding a branch over four men who are kneeling in front of her. In front of each of the men is a champagne coupe filled with a liquid. Image 41 shows the men facing downward and the woman touching one of the men's heads with the branch. The men's hands are clasped behind their backs. Image 42 shows the men with their faces down in the champagne coupes. Image 43 shows the men leaning back up. One man has a champagne coupe clasped in his teeth, another man's coupe is falling from his face toward the ground. Image 44 shows the participants and officials standing in a circle and talking. The man at the center is holding a champagne coupe. Ken Balsley stated that this ritual is common for people to engage in following their first ride in a hot air balloon.Made/Created
