Chehalis Western Wreck, unknown date. These fifteen black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. Four separate film rolls were used in the capturing of these images, so many of the physical numbers on the film strips are duplicated four times. For the purposes of this description, the film strips will be divided into four discrete groups, designated a-d. The physical numbers with an upper case "A" on the strips (ex: 17A) should not be confused with the numbers that are generated for this description, which will have a lower-case letter (ex: 17a). Nine of the strips bear five images each (images 2a-6a, 7a-11a, 12a-16a, 3b-7b, 8b-12b, 10c-14c, 7d-11d, 12d-16d, and 17d-21d), four of the strips bear four images each (images 13b-16b, 17b-20b, 15b-18c, and 3b-6d), one strip bears three images (images 19c-21c), and one strip bears two images (images 17a and 18a). These images show the cleanup efforts following the wreck of a locomotive carrying logs.
The Chehalis Western Railroad operated from 1926 into the mid-1980's, running North-South through central Thurston County. It was originally owned by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, and was later purchased by Weyerhaeuser and used to haul logs. The route of the Chehalis Western Railroad was later repurposed as a bike and walking trail called the Chehalis Western Trail.Made/Created
