Description

MAD Festival, unknown date. These seventeen film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. Twelve different rolls of film were used to create these images, and as a result many of the physical numbers on the strips are duplicated one or more times. For the purposes of this description, the images from each separate roll will have a lower-case letter assigned to them (a-l). The images on strip "a" (images 2a-6a) show a band and a person in a costume with a very large fake head and hat. They appear to be in what is now called Marcus Pavilion on the Saint's Martin's University Campus. The images on the strips designated "b" shows three men and two women in a radio studio. The images on the strip designated at "d" shows a band playing on a stage. The images on the strip designated as "e" shows two women performing a ballet-style dance number and a different woman singing. The images on the strip designated "f" shows a band performing. The images on the strip designated as "g" show a string band playing on a stage, as well as some audience members. The images overlap, but they still align with the physical numbers enough to still use the numbers. The images on the strip designated as "h" show a big band performance in what appears to be Marcus Pavilion and a man preparing food at an outdoor event. The images are misaligned, making them overlap with each other to the extent that the physical numbers are no longer useable for identification purposes. As a result, the images will be described from left to right. The images on the strip designated as "i" shows the breakroom for the organizers and staff of the MAD Festival. The images on the strip designated as "j" shows a woman in a bonnet either metalworking or cooking on hot coals. The images on the strip designated as "k" shows a woman wearing a crown of leaves performing a ritual dance. The dance is a hula dance. The images on the strip designated as "l" show an audience, a band playing, and a two-person dance performance. P.J. Kirkland was a popular radio personality for radio station KGY. His real name was Phil Pearl but went by "P.J. Kirkland" on the air. Ken Balsley related that the "Kirkland" name came from Pearl's hometown, Kirkland, Washington. Previous to working at KGY, Pearl worked for the Centralia Community College radio station, KCC. Dick Pust began working in radio in the 1950s, and was a major part of KGY radio, where he worked for 51 years. He ran for mayor of Olympia in 2011. As of October of 2016, Mr. Pust was hosting two weekly shows on MIXX 96 FM. Ken Balsley stated that, following the performances at the MAD Festival, event organizers, staff and performers would congregate in the breakroom (see group i), and sometimes the performers would entertain the organizers.
