Heart Fund, 1973. These three black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. Two different film rolls were used in the creation of this series of images, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are duplicated. For the purposes of this description, the strips will be grouped according to which film roll they originally came from, and these groups will each be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with their physical numbers (ex: 17a, 17b, etc.) to help differentiate between the images. These images show a photo session for the chairperson (Neil Woody) and area chairpersons (Jane Johnson, Myra Glick, Carol Glitschka, Judi McCormack and Judi Woody) of a fundraising effort for heart health called the Heart Fund. Image 16a shows the five women (from left to right: Jane Johnson, Myra Glick, Carol Glitschka, Judi McCormack and Judi Woody) looking at eachother and laughing. Ms. Glitschka is holding a can. Image 17a shows Ms. Glick putting something into the can. Image 18a shows the women laughing again and Ms. Glitschka and Ms. McCormack looking roughly toward the camera. Image 19a shows the five women again, but now there is a man with glasses (Neil Woody) putting something into the can. Image 20a shows the same group, but there is a sign on the table in front of them which reads "give... so more will live, HEART FUND." Image 21a is virtually identical to image 20a. Image 22a shows an unknown man with a beard looking toward the camera. Image 23a shows a young woman in overalls reading a newspaper. Image 17b shows a young boy in a paisley shirt standing in a doorway. Image 25a shows the boy in the paisley shirt greeting an adult man and woman at a doorway. There is a sign on the wall behind these people which reads "GIRL SCOUT COOKIE STATION." The image is oriented horizontally. Image 18b shows the same scene, but the image is oriented vertically.
Lacey Mayor Albert Van Andel declared the week of February 25th through Mrch 3rd of 1973 "Heart Week" in the city. The Heart Fund chairpersons were in charge of the fundraising effort attached to Heart Week. (Lacey Leader, 2/28/1973) In addition to chairing the Heart Fund, Neil Woody was also an accountant with an office in downtown Olympia. (Ken Balsley interview)
