Local businesses: Niqually Valley Upholstery, Barber Shop, Colonial Meats; 1973. These three black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. Image 2 shows a barber's pole on a building with the street address number 4404 beneath it. Image 3 is very similar to image 2, but the bottom portion of some text painted on the building above the barber's pole is visible. This text is the first four letters of "barber." Image 4 shows one man cutting another man's hair in a barber shop. There is a third man visible in the background, but he is mostly obscured by the two men involved in the haircut. Image 14 shows two men (Mike Ridgeway and Arvis Lemay, it is unclear which man is which) in aprons working at a counter of a meat shop (Colonial Meats). There are cheese wheels and paper-wrapped cuts of meat on the counter. Image 15 shows one of the men in an apron posing in a meat locker with many large cuts of beef hanging on hooks behind him. Image 16 is very similar to image 15, but the man in the apron is resting his right hand on one of the large cuts of beef. Image 17 shows the two men in aprons, and one of the men is passing a steak to the other man. There is a cutting board with a knife and pieces of meat on it behind the two men. The man on the left is looking toward the camera. Image 18 shows a similar scene to that of image 17, but the men are looking at eachother and laughing. Image 37 shows a man using a pneumatic staple gun to attach upholstery to a chair. He is looking toward the camera. Images 38-40 are virtually identical to image 37.
Colonial Meats was founded by Mike Ridgeway and Arvis Lemay in 1973. Bot men were members of the Meat Cutters Union, Local 81. Colonial Meats was located in the facility left vacant by the Olympia Cheese Factory on Martin Way. (Lacey Leader, 2/21/1973, pg. 8)
