Description

The Tape Dock, unknown date. These two black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show a man in a beard standing in front of a wall with many small shelves with cassette tapes stored in them and a storefront with a sign reading "The Tape Dock." Image 29 shows the man with the beard smiling. Sitting in front of him on a counter is a piece of equipment which may be a cash register or possibly tape recording equipment. The image is oriented vertically. Image 30 is similar to image 29, but the image is oriented horizontally and the piece of equipment in front of the man is not visible in the image frame. Image 31 shows the man in a beard standing further to the right. The shelves of cassette tapes are still visible at the left side of the frame . Immediately behind the man is an inflatable jet plane. Image 32 is very similar to image 31, but the camera's perspective is angled slightly higher. Image 33 shows the strorefront of the Tape Dock. There are two garage doors at the right side of the building, and a large awning on the left side. Based on the configuration of the building, it appears to have been a gas station and automotive repair shop which was then converted to a cassatte tape store. The front end of a car is visible entering the frame at the bottom right corner of the image. Image 34 is very similar to image 33, but the car which was entering the frame in image 33 is now almost completely visible. Image 35 is similar to the previous two images, but the photographer has moved to their right, and only a small portion of the car's hood is visible at the bottom right of the frame. The Tape Dock was a store which dealt in audio equipment, specifically audio cassettes and 8-track tapes and the corresponding playback equipment. The Tape Dock was located at 6501 Martin Way. (Lacey Leader, 6/27/1973, pg.3) Ken Balsley believed that, in addition to selling cassettee tapes and audio equipment, the Tape Dock also performed installation of tape decks into cars, which is why it was located in an old auto shop. Printed in alternation along one edge of these film negative strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM" and "KODAK TRI X PAN FILM."
