Ground breaking ceremony, unknown date. These six black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. Two separate film rolls were used in the creation of these images, so several of the physical numbers of the strips are duplicated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped based on which film roll they originally came from, and each of these groups will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with their physical numbers (ex: 17a, 17b, etc.). The images in group "a" show a large number of people gathered alongside a rural road alongside a wooded area, a band (likely a high school band) playing, several people making speeches. and several people taking turns digging with a shovel. Image 18a shows a man in a jacket and tie smiling at the camera. He is holding his right lapel with his right hand, and a car is passing on the road behind him. Image 19a shows a band composed of young people playing. A man in a suit jacket and plaid slacks is conducting the band. Image 20a shows the conductor from image 19a and a woman checking their watches. There is an American flag behind them. Image 21a shows several people walking alongside a rural road. Several cars are parked on the road, and four traffic cones are on the road between the camera and the parked cars. Image 22a shows three men standing in a circle. Two of the men are pointing toward the left side of the image frame. The third man, wearing glasses, is looking toward the ground. Image 23a shows the same three men standing in a circle as in image 22a, but they are looking at eachother and no longer pointing. Image 24a shows a large group of people gathered on the rural road and alongside it. A womanis speaking into a microphone at the left side of the frame. Behind the woman is an American flag. Image 25a shows a portion of the group of people gathered on the road. They are mostly facing toward the left side of the frame, by the rightmost person in the photo is facing toward the right side of the frame. Image 26a shows a portion of the group of people. At the center of the image are two men with beards wearing glasses. Both have their arms folded, and one of the men is wearing a priest's collar and is wearing a nametag which reads "FATHER JOHN SCOTT, Saint Martin's College." Both men are looking toward the left. Image 27a is very similar to 26a, but Father Scott is looking downward. Image 28a shows Father Scott speaking into a microphone. In the background are two women looking downward. One of the women is holding an American flag. Image 29a shows a portion of the crowd. At the center of the image is a woman in glasses who appears to be smiling. Image 30a shows a large group of people standing along the edge of the road, some are talking to each other. There is an older woman holding the hands of two small children toward the left side of the frame. Image 31a shows the crowd gathered along the side of hte road, but this time they are shown from behind. This image was captured from the opposite side of the road on which the crowd is gathered. On the opposite side of the crowd, a woman is visible speaking into a microphone while standing next to an American flag. Image 32a shows the crowd again from behind, but the photographer has either physically moved away from the crowd or zoomed out. There is a large sign toward the left side of the frame which reads "SELECT ACREAGE, TO BE LEASED OR DEVELOPED FOR YOUR NEEDS." There is more text below, but it is obscured by the heads of some of the people in the crowd. Image 34a shows three people facing toward the left. The jacket of the closest person has a light plaid pattern on it, and the man at center is balding. Image 35a shows a woman speaking into a microphone and a second woman holding the American flag. The crowd is visble beyond these two women, and the left side of the frame is filled with brush. Image 36a shows a portion of the crowd. At the center of the frame is a smiling man in a jacket with one foot up on the curb. Image 37a shows a portion of the crowd from behind and to their left. At the center of the frame is a woman with curly hair in glasses wearing a jacket and holding a purse over her shoulder. Image 38a shows a bearded man with glasses speaking into the microphone. At the right side of the frame is a woman holding the American flag, and to that woman's right a second woman is standing. Image 39a shows a woman at center holding a shovel with a shovelful of dirt in it. A man at the right side of the frame is holding a microphone toward her. Several other people are standing nearby and laughing, some are clapping. Image 40a shows a man with glasses and wearing a jacket holding a shovel in one hand, and he appears to be preparing to take his turn taking a shovelful of earth out of the ground. A man with glasses and a beard appears to have just handed him the shovel. A man in glasses is holding a microphone to the first man's face. Image 42a shows the man who had the shovel in the previous two images tossing his scoop of earth with the shovel.
