Description

St. Martin's College, unknown dates. These five black and white oversized negatives were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show St. Martin's College (now University) buildings, a sports field, and a faculty member or student painting a picture. All of these images appear to be photographs of other previously existing photographs. None of these negatives have physical numbers on them, so a number 1-5 will be assigned to them in the order that they are described. Image 1 shows Old Main from below its front steps. Image 2 shows a very similar scene, but the photographer is further away from the building (and the image more pixelated). Image 3 shows a football game in progress from a considerable distance away. The crowd is visible on the right, and there is a large building which is reminiscent of a barn in the background (with scaffolding in front of it). Based on what can be seen of the clothing of the crowd, this photograph was taken in the late 1910s or the 1920s. Image 4 shows one of St. Martin's early hilltop buildings under construction. This building is made of brick, and is just right of center in the image frame. To the left of this building is a much smaller building which has "WIRELESS" and "KGY" painted on its side; its presence indicates that this particular picture was taken during or after 1922. There is a single-story wooden rectangular building at the bottom right corner of the image. A portion of an arch is visible at the bottom left of the image. The building furthest from the camera is a very tall wooden tower with an antenna on top. There are six automobiles which appear to be Ford Model T's at the bottom of the image. Image 5 shows a man with his hair closely cropped on the sides and back and wearing a tie sitting in a chair and painting a picture. Hanging from the front of the table in front of him is what appears to be a pennant which reads "ST. RAPHA..." (presumably St. Raphael). At the bottom left of the image is a large "Post Toasties" box.
