Bill Russell and friends, unknown date. These two black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show what appears to be a basketball camp held in Saint Martin's College's (now University) Marcus Pavilion (at the time referred to as the Capital Pavilion) and a family photo. Image 13 shows a very tall person teaching four young women to shoot a three-pointer. At the bottom left corner of the image one of the young women appears to have a stick or very long piece of candy in her mouth. There are two basketball hoops visible on the far wall. Image 14 is very similar to image 13, but the photographer has moved several feet to their left. There is a scoreboard visible hanging from the ceiling. Image 15 shows the tall man still shooting three-pointers. A second tall man (Bill Russell) is visible at the left side of the image holding both hands of a small child. Image 26 shows a girl in shorts and striped socks walking toward the left of the frame. A second girl is partially visible at the left side of the frame. Image 27 shows Bill Russell seated on the lowest row of a set of retracted stands holding a basketball and speaking to two young girls. Image 28 shows Mr. Russell posing for a photo with five young girls. Mr. Russell and all the girls have their hands together on the middle of the group. The girl at the far right is looking toward the left side of the image. Image 29 shows is very similar to image 28, but the girl at far right is looking toward the camera. Image 30 shows a posed picture of a man and a woman and three children.
The Seattle Supersonics held their preseason training camps at the Capital Pavilion (now Marcus Pavilion) on the Saint Martin's campus in their early years as a team. Bill Russell was a star NBA player for the Boston Celtics from 1956 to 1969 (also as player-coach from 1966-1969). He coached several other teams after retiring as a player, including the Seattle Supersonics from 1973-1977.
Printed in alternation along one edge of these film negative strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM" and "KODAK TRI X PAN FILM."Made/Created
