Description

Olympia buildings and community members, unknown dates. These six black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using four different film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are duplicated. For the purposes of this description, the strips will be grouped according to which film roll they originally came from. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with their physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.). The images in group "a" show two men and one woman posing with a 4' x 8' piece of plywood made to look like a postal envelope. The piece of plywood is addressed to Jimmy Carter, and the return address is 2608 Pacific Ave. SE Olympia, WA and "The Opportunity to Work and Build Homes Again." On the reverse side, the piece of plywood reads "Mr. President: This piece of plywood could have been used in the building of an American home. Thanks to high interest and government controls, homebuilding and our jobs have stopped. We are at home, out of work, waiting for your answer." Image 9a shows the three people holding up the piece of plywood with the address side forward. The people holding up the piece of plywood, from left to right, are a woman with a cross necklace, a man in glasses, and a man wearing a wristwatch. Images 10a and 11a are nearly identical to image 9a. Image 12a shows the same people holding up the piece of plywood, but the plywood has been turned to the side with the text of the message printed on it. From left to right are the man with the wristwatch, the woman with the cross necklace, and the man with glasses. Images 13a and 14a are nearly identical to image 12a. The images in group "b" show a dilapidated bus or RV-style vehicle with no wheels parked in a field. There is graffiti on all visible outer surfaces of the vehicle. Image 18b shows the vehicle from a 3/4 view. The front left corner of the vehicle is the closest to the camera. Image 19b shows the vehicle from a front-on view. There is a doorlike opening in the front of the vehicle, and visible inside are many items including a lamp and a recliner. Image 20b shows the vehicle from nearly straight-on to the left side of the vehicle. The images in group "c" show boxed sets of The Time Trilogy by Madeleine L'Engle and The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. The boxed sets are posed in various configurations on a backdrop made of a towel or blanket. Image 14c shows the two boxed sets with their spines toward the camera. The Chronicles of Narnia box is laying on its side, and The Time Trilogy box is standing upright on top of The Chronicles of Narnia. Image 15c is nearly identical to image 14c. Image 16c is similar to imaes 14c and 15c, but the configuration of the books is reversed, with The Time Trilogy laying on its side and The Chronicles of Narnia standing upright on top. Image 17c is nearly identical to image 16c. Image 18c shows the two boxed sets side-by-side with their title sides toward the camera. The Time Trilogy is on the left, and The Chronicles of Narnia are on the right. Image 19c is nearly identical to image 18c. Image 20c shows the two boxed sets with their spines toward the camera. The sets are side-by-side with The Time Trilogy on the left and The Chronicles of Narnia on the right. Image 21c is nearly identical to imae 20c. The images in group "d" show Olympia's Sylvester Park, the Washington State Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction building (also known as the Old Capitol Building), an unknown park, and the northeast side of St. Martin's College's Old Main building. Image 40d shows Sylvester Park. The gazebo is in the top left quadrant of the image, and the statue of Governor John Rogers is visible to the right of image center. Images 41d and 42d are nearly identical to image 40d. Image 43d shows the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction building. The image is oriented vertically. Image 44d is nearly identical to image 43d, but here the image is oriented horizontally. Image 1d shows a park. There is a picnic table visible in the bottom right quadrant of the image, and a baseball backstop in the background toward the right. Image 2d shows the northeast side of Saint. Martin's College's Old Main building. Images 3d and 4d are nearly identical to image 2d. John Rankin Rogers was the third governor of Washington State. Elected twice, he served from January of 1897 until his death in December of 1901. The building now used as the Office of the Supintendent of Public Instruction was originally built as the Thurston County Courthouse, which was completed in 1892. In 1905, it became the Washington State Capitol building and housed most of the state's agencies. The Old Capitol is located on Washington Street SE between Legion Way SE and 7th Avenue SE. Sylvester Park is across Washington Street from the Old Capitol. Printed at intervals along one edge of all of these film negative strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM 5063."
