Description

Tennis and bicycling, unknown dates. These seven black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. At least two different film rolls were used in the creation of these images, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are duplicated. For the purposes of this description, the strips will be divided according to which film roll they originally came from. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the images' physical numbers (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between the images. The images in group "a" show women taking a tennis lesson at a tennis court, two adults riding bicycles in biycling outfits, and people watching someone with a parachute landing in a lake. Image 6a shows two women standing and holding tennis rackets in their right hands. The woman closer to the camera is wearing a striped shirt and shorts, and the woman further from the camera is wearing a tennis uniform and sweatpants. They are facing toward the right-hand side of the image frame. Image 7a shows the woman in the tennis uniform and sweatpants holding her tennis racket up in the air and gesturing with her left hand. There is a woman in a t-shirt and shorts standing in the foreground and facing away from the camera. Image 8a shows the woman in a tennis uniform and sweatpants holding her racket with both hands and laughing. There is a woman in a striped t-shirt facing away from the camera in the foreground. Image 9a shows the woman in a tennis uniform and sweatpants holding her racket up in the air and smiling or laughing. The woman in the striped t-shirt from the previous image is again facing away from the camera in the foreground. Image 15a shows two people on bicycles wearing bicycling outfits rounding a corner. Several spectators are watching from the right-hand side of the image frame, so the image is presumably showing a bicycle race. There is a large arrow on the road, and this arrow is near the botom center of the image. Image 16a is very similar to the previous image, but the arrow is in the bottom right corner of the image. Image 17a shows people seated on a shoreline of a lake watching someone with a parachute landing in a lake. The parachute is fully extended, but the person appears to already be in the water (the person with the parachute is obscured by a lifeguard chair). Image 18a shows more spectators watching from the shoreline. The parachute is laying in the water. Images 20a through 25a show more images of the tennis lessons. Image 20a shows the woman in a tennis uniform and sweatpants holding her tennis racket toward the ground. She is standing behind two other women holding tennis rackets. The woman closest to the camera is wearing a visor. Image 21a shows the woman in the tennis uniform and sweatpants tossing a tennis ball up in the air in preparation to serve the ball. There is a woman with glasses holding a tennis racket toward the left side of the image and three other women in the background. Image 22a shows the woman in the tennis uniform and sweatpants looking back toward the woman with glasses. Image 23a shows the woman in the tennis uniform and sweatpants holding a tennis racket and walking toward the right-hand side of the image frame. The woman in glasses is in the background. Image 24a shows the woman in the tennis uniform and sweatpants in a pose suggesting that she is about to serve. She is holding the racket behind her back, and her left arm is extended up in the air. She is holding two tennis balls in her left hand. The woman in glasses is emulating the first woman's pose. Image 25 a shows the woman in the tennis uniform and sweatpants extending her racket straight up in the air in her right hand. The woman in the striped shirt and shorts and the woman in glasses are watching. The images in group "b" show a young boy riding a bicycle and posing with the bicycle. Image 23b shows the boy riding his bicycle toward the camera. Behind the boy and toward the left is a van oriented away from the camera. In front of the van is a Ford pickup truck, also oriented away from the camera. There is a real estate sign at the right side of the image for Country Squire Realty. The contact listed on the sign is Dora Hinchcliffe. Image 24b shows a very similar scene to that of image 23b, but the boy is closer to the camera. Image 25b is again similar, but the real estate sign is not visible and the boy's left foot is on the ground. Image 26b is similar to image 25b, but her the real estate sign is again visible. Image 27b shows the boy posing with his bicycle. The bicycle is parallel to the picture plane, and the boy is looking toward the camera. The boy is on a sidewalk. Image 28b and 29b are virtually identical to image 27b. Image 30b shows a similar scene to images 27b - 29b, but the photographer has moved from the sidewalk and out into the road. The boy is positioned in the same way, but now the bicycle is perpendicular to the image frame. In the foreground is a striped crosswalk. The boy is looking directly at the camera, and the image is oriented horizontally. Image 31 is very similar to the previous image, but the boy is looking slightly toward the left of the camera, and the image is oriented vertically. Images 32b and 33b are very similar to image 30a, but these images are oriented vertically. Printed along one edge of all of these film negative strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM 5063."
