Description

Construction, unknown dates. These eight black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using four different film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description the strips will be grouped according to which film roll they originally came from, and each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with their physical numbers (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show three men renovating or newly finishing the interior of a home or small commercial building. Image 37a shows an unfinished countertop with wood scraps and other debris on the ground around it. Image 38a shows three men laying carpet or linoleum in a room. One of the men is spreading adhesive out of a bucket onto the floor, a second man is rolling out the linoleum or carpet, and a third man is standing and looking down at the other men. Image 39 shows the man who was spreading the adhesive standing up, and the man who was rolling out the linoleum or carpet crouching with his right hand touching the ground. The third man is still standing. Image 40a shows a man in a stocking cap and plaid shirt holding a rectangular piece of wood or linoleum in his left hand. Image 41a shows a man with a mustache spreading adhesive on the back of a sheet of linoleum or carpet. Image 42a shows a room with a door and window at the left and a large roll of linoleum or carpet at the right. Image 43a shows a man in a plaid shirt and boots walking toward the left side of the image and looking away from the camera. There is an outlet on the floor near his feet with two extension cords plugged into it. Image 44a shows a room with a window at the left side of the image and various wires and coils of wider-gauge materials. Image 1a shows a folding ladder extending nearly to the ceiling of a room. There is a crawlspace entrance in the ceiling immediately above the ladder. There are also two sawhorses below the ladder. Image 2a shows a man through a doorway laying down carpet or linoleum. There is a vacuum cleaner near the man. The images in group "b" show interior and exterior shots of a large, empty commercial space. Image 12b shows a blurry shot of the interior of the commercial space. Image 13b shows the same scene, but is in-focus. Image 14b shows the exterior of the commercial space. The front 2/3 of one car and the rear 1/3 of a second car are both visible in front of the commercial space at the left side of the image frame. Image 15b is very simillar to image 14b, but only the rear 1/3 of the car is visible. Image 16b is very similar to image 15b, but here slightly less of the car is visible. Images 17b, 18b, 19b and 20b are nearly identical to image 16b. Image 21b shows the interior of the commercial space, but the photographer has either backed up or zoomed out relative to image 13b. The front door of the commercial space is visible near the left-hand edge of the image. Image 22b is virtually identical to image 21b. Images 23b and 24b both show the exterior of the commercial space, and these images are also partially overlapping. These images are oriented horizontally. Images 25b and 26b are very similar to images 23b and 24b, but they are oriented vertically. The images in group "c" shows a crew of workers plotting out the foundation of a building and beginning construction on a large structure. Image 16c shows one man wearing glasses and no shirt working with a surveying tool on a tripod while a second man nearby holds a mattock upside-down. Image 17c shows the man with glasses using the surveying tool, the man with the mattock now leaning on the mattock, and a third man holding a marker for the man taking surveying measurements. Image 18c shows the man taking surveing measurements from behind, and the other two men are visible in the distance. Image 19c shows the man in glasses standing next to the piece of surveying equipment. A second man is standing at the corner of the foundation in the distance. Image 20c shows three men standing inside the form for a building's foundation. One man is at the corner nearest the camera and the two other men are near the opposite corner. Image 21c shows a cement block structure under construction. Two men in hardhats and a forklift are visible inside the structure. Image 22c shows a wood frame of a large structure which has partially been covered in sheets of plywood. Image 4d shows a man in overalls and a plaid shirt carrying a large sheet of plywood alongside a large structure with the facade in the process of being put up. Image 5d shows two women and one man exiting the structure. There is a truck inside the structure. Image 6d shows a different woman walking past the truck parked inside the structure. Image 7d shows the exterior of South Sound National Bank. South Sound National Bank was previously Seattle Trust. (Ken Balsley interview, 11/11/2016) Printed at intervals along one edge of each of the strips in groups a, c and d is "KODAK SAFETY FILM 6053." Printed in alternation along one edge of the strips in group b is "KODAK SAFETY FILM" and "KODAK TRI X PAN FILM."
