Description

Campfire Girls and flag, 1973. These five black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using two different film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are duplicated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to which film roll they originally came from. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the images' physical numbers (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show the American flag flying at half-mast and the American flag and flag of Washington state flying on the same pole, also at half-mast. Image 2a shows the American flag at half-mast. It is flowing toward the left of the pole. Image 3a shows the flag flowing toward the right. Image 4a also shows the flag flowing toward the right, but it is more taut. Image 5a is similar to image 4am but there is a leafless limb at the top of the image. Image 6a is similar to the previous four images, but here the photographer has zoomed in on the flag. Image 7a shows the flag flowing toward the right. Image 8a is very simialr to image 7a, but the perspective has lowered. Image 9a is similar to 8a, but the perspective has again lowered. Image 10a shows the flag flowing toward th left with theree large coniferous trees in the distance behind the flag. Image 11a is very similar to 10a, but the perspective has dropped slightly. Image 12a is nearly identical to image 11a. Image 13a shows the American flag and Washington State flag flying from the same pole. They are both flowing toward the right. Image 14a is very similar to image 13a, but here the flags are more taut. Image 15a is very simialr to image 14a, but the photographer has zoomed in on the flags slightly. The images in group "b" show two Campfire Girls (Kim Miller and Andrea Randall) selling cookies to a man (Hans Harjo) at the door to a business. Image 10b shows the two girls standing outside the door with Mr. Harjo looking out and speaking to them. Image 11b is similar to image 10b, but Mr. Harjo is looking toward the camera. Image 12b shows Mr, Harjo still looking at the camera, but one of the girls has backed away. Image 13a is similar to image 12a, but Mr. Harjo is looking down at the girls again. Image 14b is very similar to image 13b, but the photographer has zoomed in on their subjects. Image 15b is similar to the previous images, but the girls are standing closer to Mr. Harjo. One of the girls' faces is hidden behind the nearer girl's head. Image 16b is very similar to image 15b, but here you can see both girl's faces. These images accompanied a story concerning a Campfire Girls' candy sale which was set to begin on 2/1/1973. (Lacey Leader, 1/31/1973, pg. 4) Printed at intervals along one edge of each of these film negative strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM 5063."
