Description

Timberline vs. Battleground Basketball, 1981. These ten black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using at least two different film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips identifying the individual images are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to which film roll they originally came from. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show the first half of a boys' high school basketball game between the Timberline Blazers and the Battleground Tigers. This game took place in 1981. Image 34a shows three players with their arms up in the air. The ball is in the air above their heads, but none of them are touching it. Player 15 for the Tigers is facing the camera and is the player with his hands nearest to the ball. Image 35a shows several players looking up toward the ball which is either touching the hoop rim or very nearly so. Player 42 for the Blazers is the furthest player toward the right-hand side of the image, and player 15 for Battleground is the player furthest toward the left. Image 36a shows several players reaching up for a rebound. Player 43 for the Tigers is the nearest to the right-hand side of the image. A referee is occupying the left-hand side of the foreground, and he is facing away from the camera. Image 37a shows a Timberline player with a jersey number beginning in 4 jumping up toward the basket for a lay up. His right leg is kicked out in front of him, and this leg is partally obscuring a referee in the background. Image 38a shows a Timberline player with a jersey number beginning with 1 dribbling the ball while a Battleground player with a jersey number ending in 5 approaches to defend. A small banner is visible on the wall toward the right-hand edge of the image which reads "GO!" Image 39a shows player 12 for the Blazers dribbling the ball through open court. The scoreboard is visible in the background and shows that there is 2:46 left in the first period. Image 40a shows a Battleground player dribbling the ball and fending off a defender. The ball is obscuring his jersey number. Player 25 for Battelground is visible in the left-hand half of the image motioning that he is open. Image 41a shows a man with a mustache in a suit and tie crocuhing down in a circle of Timberline players. Image 42a shows player 41 for Battleground about to release a jump shot. Player 20 for Timberline is immediately belwo the basket. Image 43a shows player 25 for Battleground about to release a jump shot. The scoreboard is visible in the background and shows that there is 6:44 left in the second quarter. Image 44a shows a Battleground player having just released an overhead pass to his teammates toward the left-hand side of the image. Player 44 for Timberline is stretching his arms out above him to try and block the pass, but he failed. Imahe 1a shows player 41 for Battleground holding the ball out to his right and looking for a teammate to pass to. The scoreboard shows that there is 5:23 left in the second period. Image 2a shows player 12 for the Blazers dribbling down the court. Player 21 for Battleground is running alongside him. Image 3a shows a Blazers player with a jersey number ending in 4 dribbling the ball and a Battleground player with a jersey number ending in 5 defending. The scoreboard is visible in the top right corner of the image and shows that there is 3:52 left in the second period. Image 4a shows a Battleground player with a jersey number beginning with 2 dribbling the ball. A Timberline player with a jersey number ending in four is defending. Player 41 for the Tigers is near the right-hand edge of the image. Image 5a shows player 42 for Timberline having just passed to ball. Player 11 for the Tigers attempted to block the pass, but failed. Image 6a shows Tigers players 25 and 41 jumping up to block a shot,but the ball is visible traveling above them through the air. Image 7a shows player 42 for Timberline going for a lay up. Player 13 for Battleground is immediately below him, and a referee is at the left-hand edge of the image. Image 8a shows approximately six young people holding up a banner which reads "State Champions 1980 Basketball, Timberline High School." Image 9a shows a portion of the crowd at the game. To the left of the center of the image is a young woman standing up and clapping. She is wearing a shirt which reads "Timberline 81 Seniors." The images in group "b" show the second half of the same boys' high school basketball game between the Timberline Blazers and the Battleground Tigers shown in group "a." The game took place in the Timberline High School gymnasium. Image 24b shows player 12 for Timberline coming back down to the ground following a jump shot. The ball is visible near the hoop, and player 41 for Battleground is jumping up in front of the shooter and facing away from the camera. Image 25b shows player 44 for Timberline jumping up with the ball held in both hands above his head. He appears to be about to shoot the ball. A player with a jersey number ending in 1 and a player with a jersey number beginning with 4, both from Battleground, are trying to defend against the shot. Image 26b shows player 14 for Timberline dribblng the ball. Player 15 for Battleground is running alongside him. Image 27b shows player 12 for the Blazers having just released a jump shot. Player 41 for Battleground is jumping up to block the shot. Image 28b shows a Tigers player about to pass the ball into play. The scoreboard is visible in the background and shows that there is 2:34 left in the third period. Image 29b shows player 42 for the Blazers jumping up under the hoop, having just released a lay-up or trying to get a rebound. Player 43 for the Tigers is crouching down to the left of player 42 for Timberline. Image 30b shows player 25 for the Tigers holding the ball with both hands and preparing to pass. Player 34 for Timberline is standing in front of the player holding the ball and trying to defend. He is facing away from the camera. Image 31b shows player 32 for the Blazers jumping off the ground, looking to his right and holding his right arm out to his side. The right-hand side of a referee's body is visible at the left-hand side of the image frame. The referee is facing away from the camera. Image 32b shows a Timberline player running and presumably dribbling the ball. Player 45 for the Tigers is attempting to guard him. Player 15 for the Tigers is the player furthest toward the right-hand side of the image. Image 33b shows player 15 for the Tigers holding the ball in both hands while facing away from the camera. The ball itself is not visible in the image. Player 42 for the Blazers is guarding him, and player 34 for Timberline is near the left-hand edge of the image. Image 34b shows player 25 for the Tigers leaning over slightly and holding the ball with both hands. He is facing away from the camera. Player 14 for Timberline is guarding him. Player 12 for the Blazers is the player furthest toward the right in this image. Image 35b shows player 34 for Timberline jumping very high into the air. Player 44 for Timberline is leaning over and facing away from the camera. He is holding his left hand behind his back. Image 36b shows player 25 for the Tigers about to release a jump shot. Player 44 for the Blazers is the player nearest the camera, and he is facing away from the camera. Player 14 for the Blazers is the player furthest toward the right in this image. Image 37b shows a player for the Tigers holding the ball up above his head in preparation to pass the ball. Player 20, 44 and 42 for Timberline are guarding him. Image 38b shows a Timberline player facing away from the camera and trying to pass the ball. Player 21 for the Tigers is jumping up in the air at the right-hand edge of the image. Image 39b shows several players looking up at the ball, which is in the air only inches above the hoop. Player 42 for the Blazers is jumping up in the air, and a referee is partially visible at the left-hand side of the image. The images in group "c" show the end and immediate aftermath of the same basketball game shown in groups a and b. Image 42c shows player 20 for the Blazers appearing to come back down after getting a rebound. Player 12 for the Blazers is visible toward the background, but no other jersey numbers are visible. Image 43c shows player 42 for the Blazers up in the air and looking toward his left. The ball is in the air approximately 18" above his head. Player 13 for the Tigers is the player furthest toward the right-hand side of the image. Image 44c shows player 44 for the Blazers going to a lay up and player 41 for the Tigers trying to block it. Image 1c shows the Timberline players coming off the bench and clapping. Player 12 for Timberline is facing away from the camera in the foreground. Image 2c shows a man with a mustache in a tie and plaid pants looking over his right shoulder. Timberline's player 44 is visible in the background facing away from the camera. Image 3c shows the man with the mustache in the tie and plaid pants facing toward the camera. Images 4c-6c show a button on a lapel. The button reads "WE'RE #1, IT'S A WAY OF LIFE." Image 7c is blank. Printed along one long edge of each of these film negative strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM 5063."
