Description

Misc. photos, unknown dates. These eight black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using six different film rolls, so many of the images' physical numbers on the strips are repeated one or more times. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to which film roll they originally came from. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips within that group (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show people water skiing and otherwise recreating on a lake. Image 9a shows a man and a woman in a outboard-powered motorboat with a line extending from the boat across the water to the bottom edge of the image. Image 10a shows a woman on a pair of water skis by the motorboat shown in image 9a. The woman on the waterskis' head is partially obscuring the boat. Image 11a shows two men in a boat which is up on a boat ramp, but still partially in the water. The men prepare to be tying up or untying the boat. Image 12a shows the motorboat pulling someone on a pair of waterskis. The boat is on the right-hand side of the image and the waterskier is on the left. Image 13a shows one adult and two children wading in a lake. There is a man petting a dog on the shoreline. The images in group "b" shows the front of what appears to be a grocery store. There is no sign visible in any of the images, and the inside of the structure is empty. Image 27b shows the front of the store space. There are two sets of glass and metal double doors, and there is a covered garbage can near the center of the image. A Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant is visible in the reflection in the store's windows. Image 28b is very similar to the previous image, but there is a Mazda coupe passing in front of the store. Image 29b is similar to image 27b, but the photographer has tipped the camera upward, so more of the sky and less of the pavement in front of the store are visible. Image 30b is similar to image 29b, but the photographer has tipped the camera back down, but not as far down as that shown in image 27b. Image 31b is similar to the previous image on the strip, but the image is oriented vertically where the others were oriented horizontally. Image 32b shows the empty interior of the store. There is a stepladder in the foreground of the image. The images in group "c" show a rambler-style home with an attached garage at the right-hand side. Image 31c shows the front of the house from the vantage point of to the right-hand side of the front yard. Image 32c is virtually identical to image 31c. Image 33c shows the front of the house from a straight-on perspective. Image 34c is nearly identical to image 33c. Image 35c shows the house from a vantage point in the left-hand side of the front yard. The images in group "d" show four people at a small cabin in a wooded area. Image 25d shows two young women, one young man and two dogs seated on the front step of the cabin. Image 26d is very similar to the previous image, but a second man is standing in the doorway. Image 27d shows one of the young women looking at one of the cabin's boarded-up windows. Image 28d shows one of the young women standing outside the cabin's front door. The images in group "e" show a portion of a house overlooking the Washington State Capitol. Image 32e shows a portion ot the home on the left-hand side of the image, and the Capitol in the distance at the center of the image. The image is oriented horizontally. Image 33e is nearly identical to image 32e, but it is oriented vertically. Image 34e is virtually identical to image 33e. Image 35e is virtually identical to image 32e. The image in group "f" show a ferris wheel and the surrounding carnival. Image 5f shows the ferris wheel from near its base and looking up. The image was captured from near the right-hand "edge" of the wheel. Image 6f is similar to the previous image, but the photographer has moved to their left and closer to the center hub of the wheel. Image 7f is similar to the previous image, but the photographer has moved closer to the ferris wheel. Image 8f shows the ferris wheel from much further away than in the previous images. Here the wheeled base of the ferris wheel is visible in the image. Image 9f shows the ferris wheel and two large rides to its left. Image 10f shows the ferris wheel and other surrounding rides. There is a person visible working on one of the rides on the left-hand side of the image. Ken Balsley believed that carnival shown here is the Funtastic Shows carnival, which came to South Sound Center on an annual basis, usually during public schools' spring break. (Ken Balsley interview, 11/11/2016) Printed in alternation along one edge of all of these film negative strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM" and "KODAK TRI X PAN FILM."
