Description

Unidentified people, unknown dates. These nineteen black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using many different individual film rolls, so many of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated one or more times. For the purposes of this description, these film negative strips will be grouped according to which film roll they originally came from. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with their physical numbers (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show a man in a button-up, collared shirt posing for a photograph. Image 33a shows the man from the mid-torso up. He is wearing glasses and smiling. His head and body are oriented toward his right. Image 34a is similar to the previous image, but he is not wearing glasses and he appears to be speaking. His head and body are oriented toward his left. Image 35a is very similar to image 34a, but here the man is not speaking. The images in group "b' show an older man in horn-rimmed glasses and a t-shirt posing for photographs. The man is partially bald. Image 32b shows the man with his head oriented toward his left. He is not smiling, and he is not looking toward the camera. Image 33b is nearly identical to image 32b. Image 34b is very similar to the previous two images, but the man's body is now oriented to his right and he is facing directly toward the camera. The images in group "c" show a woman in horn-rimmed glasses and a patterned sweater-vest posing for photos. The pattern on the sweater-vest includes flowers and checkered sections. She is also wearing a pendant necklace. The pendant has a design resembling the letter "H." Image 38c shows the woman with her head and body oriented toward her left, but she is looking at the camera. Image 39c is very similar to the previous image, but the woman has turned her head and body very slightly more toward the camera. Image 40c shows the woman with her head and body oriented toward her right. She is not looking toward the camera, and she is smiling. The images in group "d" show a man with a mustache and glasses posing for photographs. He is wearing a suit and tie. Image 43d shows the man looking at the camera while his body is oriented toward his left. He is smiling or speaking. The man is shown from the mid-torso up. Image 44d shows the man from the chest-up, but here he is not smiling. Image 45d shows the man with his head and body turned toward his left. He is not looking toward the camera, and he appears to be laughing. The images in group "e" show a woman in an elaborate formal dress and a man in a suit and tie. The man and woman appear to be dressed for their wedding. Image 14e shows the woman posing for a photo. Her head and body are oriented toward her right, and she is not looking toward the camera. She is holding a lacy fan in front of her mid-torso. Image 15e is similar to the previous image, but the woman has turned more toward the camera. Image 16e shows the man in suit and tie. The tie is wide with a paisley pattern, and he is wearing a corsage. The man is smiling and his head and body are oriented toward his right. The images in group "f" show a woman wearing a jacket over a turtleneck sweater. She is also wearing a necklace which may have seashells on it. Image 30f shows the woman with her body turned toward her left at an almost 90 degree angle in relation to the camera. Her head is turned toward the camera and she is smiling. Image 31f is nearly identical to image 30f. The images in group "g" show a man with a mustache from the shoulders-up. He is wearing a plaid, collared shirt with a jacket or hooded sweatshirt over it. Image 9g shows the man looking toward the camera with a serious look on his face. Image 10g is very similar to image 9g, but here the man is smiling. The images in group "h" show a man with long hair and a beard posing for photos. He is wearing a button-up, collared shirt with a paisley pattern on it. Image 37h shows the man with his head and body oriented toward his left. He appears to be laughing. Image 38h shows the man in a similar pose, but the camera has moved to a lower point of view, looking up toward the man's face. The images in group "i" show a man with wavy hair and a mustache with a button-up, collared shirt with a paisley design on it. He is facing directly toward the camera, and he is shown from the shoulders up. He may be the same man as shown in group "h," only with shorter hair and no beard. The images in group "j" show an older man seated on a couch reading a document. The man is wearing glasses, a watch, and a striped shirt. He is shown nearly in profile in all of the images. The text of the document is too small to read, but the format of the document suggests that it may be a resolution. Image 1j shows the man reading the document with his right hand held to his chin. Image 2j shows a similar scene to that of the previous image, but the photographer has moved closer to the man and slightly to the right. Image 3j is similar to the previous two images, but the photographer has moved back away from the man slightly. The man is holding the document in his right hand. Image 4j shows the man having turned slightly to his left, making his face less visible but the document more visible. Image 5j is nearly identical to image 4j. The images in group "k" show a man (Ken Balsley) seated at a desk in an office which is presumably the office of the Lacey Leader newspaper. There is a woman in the background seated at another desk. Image 19k shows Mr. Balsley holding his left hand up toward his face. He may be holding a pen in that hand. Image 20k shows Mr. Balsley opening an envelope. The woman is holding up what appears to be a newspaper. Image 21k shows items on a desk, including a telephone and a typewriter. The images in group "l" show a large planning bulletin board and a bearded man posing next to a large shelf holding many magnetic tape data storage reels. Image 11l shows a bulletin board laid out similarly to a calendar. Down the left-hand side of the board are four cards which read "NOV." Across the top are the days of the week. There are many small cards attached to the board in various locations. Image 12l shows a bearded man with glasses wearing a plaid vest and matching pants. He is holding a single magnetic tape data storage reel in hs right hand and standing next to a shelf with dozens of other reels on it. Image 13l is very similar to the previous image, but the photographer has pitched the camera up slightly, making less of the man's legs visible in the image frame. The images in group "m" show several children and adults in a grassy outdoor area carrying bags with the "pitch it in" trash logo on them. The people appear to be engaged in a park clean-up or similar activity. Image 3m shows six people carrying the bags. Image 4m shows two men standing near the tailgate of a Chevrolet pickup truck. One of the men is bending over, and there is a van parked behind the men and pickup truck. Image 5m shows a man carrying a child over his shoulders. The child is holding a hat in their left hand. The images in group "n show four men posing with a flyer for a "Diabetes Bike-a-thon." Image 6n shows the four men posing with the flyer. Two men are standing and two are seated. Image 9n shows three of the four men all standing and posing for a photo with the flyer. The man on the left is looking down at the flyer, and the other men are looking toward the camera. Image 10n shows an indistinct blur. Image 11n is very similar to image 9n, but all three of the men are looking toward the camera. The images in group "o" show people working and eating at a diner. Image 30o shows two women and a man behind the counter at a diner. Image 31o shows the same two women behind the counter, but the photographer has panned to their right to show several customers seated at the counter. The image in group "p" shows an image which is too blurred to make out. The images in group "q" are two overlapping images of a child kneeling down to pose with a trophy and a golf club. Printed in alternation along one edge of each of these film negative strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM" and "KODAK TRI X PAN FILM."
