Untitled, unknown dates. These eight black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using several different film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated.
For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to which film roll they originally came from. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images.
The images in group "a" show the second Lacey Leader office. Image 22a shows four people in a room with a high-peaked ceiling. Three of the people are seated at desks, and one person is standing. There are two large pieces of electronic equipment in the foreground. Image 23a shows a woman seated at a desk. Through a doorway behind the woman a man is visible seated at a second desk. The man appears to be Ed Bagley, owner of the Lacey Leader. There is a set of double doors on the right-hand side of the image, and a bouquet of flowers in the left-hand foreground. Image 24a shows the man who was visible in the background of the previous image still seated at the desk. He is looking down toward the desk, and a doorjamb is visible on the left-hand side of the image. Image 25a shows a different part of the same room shown in image 22a. There are two skylights visible in the ceiling, and a woman is working at a desk near the left-hand edge of the image. Image 26a shows the man from image 24a again seated at the desk. The photographer has moved closer to the man, and the man is now shown in profile. The man is writing something. Image 27a is very similar to the previous image, but the man is looking toward the camera and smiling. Image 32a shows a man in a room with no furniture. The room is in the same Lacey Leader office as shown in the previous images in this group. The man appears to be turning the valve on the top of a gas canister which is connected to a cylindrical device which is sitting on the floor. The cylindrical device may be a heater. Image 33a shows another part of the inside of the second Lacey Leader office with no furniture. The top section of a short ladder is visible in the foreground, and an unhung door is leaning against the wall at the right. Image 34a shows a different view of the same room shown in the previous image. One of the double doors at the right is standing open. Image 35a shows someone carrying the gas canister and cylindrical device shown in image 32a across a room in the second Lacey Leader office. Image 36a shows an exterior shot of the second Lacey Leader office. There is a stooped-over person walking in front of the building. There is a van parked to the right of the building, and there is a decal on one of the van's windows which reads "Lacey Leader." Image 37a shows a pickup truck with a moving truck-type enclosure mounted on the bed. On the side of the enclosure is "ANDERSON TRANSFER." The truck is on a road.
The images in group "b" show interior shots of the Lacey Leader office, a child playing in a bedroom, and a town hall meeting or similar event. Image 15b shows a woman seated at a desk in the second Lacey Leader office. Visible through an interior window behind the woman is Ed Bagley, also seated at a desk. Image 16b shows a person in the Lacey Leader office working at a large piece of electronic equipment. There are several other similar large pieces of electronic equipment in the room as well. Image 17b shows a child riding a rocking horse in a bedroom. This image is underexposed, making it difficult to make out many details. Image 18b is very similar to the previous image, but it is not underexposed. The child is looking toward the camera. Image 19b shows several dozen people seated in a large, wood-paneled room. This room is located at the Thurston County Fairgrounds. Seven people are at the front of the room facing the audience. One of the people at the front of the room is standing. This standing person may be Karen Fraser, one-time mayor of Lacey. Image 20b is very similar to the previous image, but the only person standing in this image is a man in a suit.
The images in group "c" show exterior shots of two different houses. Image 2c shows a rambler-style home with an attached garage occupying the left-hand end of the house. There is a station wagon parked in the driveway and two mailboxes near the right-hand edge of the image, Image 3c is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 4c shows a house with a mansard roof in a wooded area at te end of a long driveway. The street number is very small, but it appears to be 3722. Images 5 and 6c are nearly identical to image 4c.
The images in group "d" show seven women and one man posing for a photo outside of a hair salon, and a woman working at a desk in an office. Image 35d shows the seven women and one man posing in front of the beauty salon. The name of the salon as shown on the front window is "Cut and Curl Beauty Salon." Images 36d-38d are all nearly identical to image 35d. Image 39d is blank. Image 40d shows a woman seated at a desk in profile. The image appears to have been captured at the second Lacey Leader office. The images in group "e" show two older women at a piano. One woman is seated at the piano, the other is standing and holding sheet music. Image 15e shows both women looking at the sheet music. Image 16e shows the standing woman looking toward the seated woman. Image 17e again shows both women looking at the sheet music. The woman seated at the piano appears to be smiling or singing. Image 18e is very similar to the previous image, but the woman seated at the piano's face is out of focus. Image 19e shows the two women from a different perspective, the photographer having moved to his or her left. The woman seated at the piano is shown in profile. Image 20e is nearly identical to image 19e. The images in group "f" show people at a beach and a large tree rootball washed up on the shore. Image 3f shows a shot of a beach. The water is to the left, with sand in the foreground and a wooded hill in the right-hand background. There are no people visible in this image. Image 4f shows three people standing on top of a large rock formation. Image 5f shows one man standing on a rock formation. There is a long expanse of wooded land visible in the background. Imae 6f shows a large tree rootball washed up on the shore. The image is fairly close-up to the rootball, so some of the rootball is outside of the image frame. Image 7f is very similar to the previous image, but the photographer has moved away or zoomed out from the rootball. Image 8f is similar to the previous two images, but the photographer has zoomed out further. The images in group "g" show an existing photograph of a group of thirteen people posing for a photo. There is a sign at the center of the group which reads "OTCC FARRIERY." Images 20g-24g are all nearly identical.
OTCC is a reference to Olympia Technical Community College, one of the former names of what is now (September 2017) South Puget Sound Community College. Farriery is the professional care and shoeing of horses' hooves. (Ken Balsley interview 11/11/2016)
