Description

SMC vs. UPS Basketball, 1973. These five black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show a boys' high school basketball game between the Saint Martin's Universtiy Saints and the University of Puget Sound Loggers. The game was played in what is now Marcus Pavilion on the Saint Martin's campus. Most of the images are blurred to some extent. Image 27 shows a UPS player with jersey number 42 (or perhaps 48) jumping in the air and looking up over his right shoulder. Player 22 for Saint Martin's is partially obscured behind player 42. The ball is visible immediately above the far top corner of the basketball hoop. Image 28 shows player 32 for the Saints about to release a jump shot. Player 52 for UPS is reaching up to try and block the shot. Player 40 for UPS is partially visible in the bottom left-hand corner. Image 29 shows player 52 for UPS reaching his right arm high into the air. His right foot is up off the floor, and his left foot is outside the image frame. Image 30 shows one Saint Martin's player from behind, but it is so blurred that no other details are discernible. Image 31 shows a Saint Martin's player about to release a jump shot. the image is very blurred so the player's jersey number cannot be made out. A player for UPS, whose jersey number appears to be 40, is immediately to the left of the shooter. Image 32 shows Saint Martin's player 52 running after the ball, which is in the air in front of and slightly above his face. Image 33 shows two UPS players below the hoop. The player on the left is 22. The image is otherwise very blurred. Image 34 shows a Saint Martin's player preparing the pass the ball. This player is shown from his right side. A player from UPS is partially visible in the bottom right corner. Image 35 shows player 52 for Saint Martin's holding the ball up over his head with both hands. Player 50 for Saint Martin's is visible in the background. Image 36 shows two Saint Martin's players (one of which has jersey number 24) and one UPS player chasing the ball. The ball is visible in the air at the center of the right-hand edge of the image. Image 37 shows the ball in the air near the center of thetop edge of the image. Several players are partially visible at the left-hand edge of the image. Image 38 shows a Saint Martin's player having released a jump shot. Player 10 for Saint Martin's is the closest player to the camera, and he is facing away from the camera. Image 39 shows player 22 for Saint Martin's dribling the ball. Player 52 for Saint Martin's is the player furthest to the left in the image. The bottom portion of the scoreboard is visible at the top of the image. Image 40 shows a player for Saint Martin's with both arms up in the air, and his left leg bent up at the knee. Player 44 for UPS is the player furthest toward the left-hand side of the image. Image 41 shows part of the crowd for the game, and a player for Saint Martin's in the bottom right corner. The image is very blurred, making further details undiscernible. Image 42 shows several players from each team in a jumble near the center of the court. The scoreboard is visible in the top right corner of the image. The image is very blurry. Image 43 shows player 32 for St. Martin's about to release a shot. He is facing away from the camera, and leaning back. Player 50 for UPS and a second player for UPS are trying to defend against the shot. Image 44 shows several players from each of the teams appearing to go after a rebound. Player 50 for Saint Martin's is the only jersey number that is completely visible. Image 1 shows player 54 for UPS looking up over his left corner. Player 52 for Saint Martin's is reaching his right arm out diagonally upward. Image 2 shows player 42 for UPS either having just released a shot or reaching out for a rebound. Image 3 shows several players from each team standing under the hoop and looking up at the ball, which is immediately above and to the left of the hoop. The player furthest toward the left is number 40 for UPS. Image 4 sows player 32 for St. Martin's and two player from UPS looking toward the hoop. The top of the image is cut off. Printed in alternation along one edge of these film negative strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM" and "KODAK TRI X PAN FILM."
