Description

North Thurston Swim Team, 1973. These five black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images show five young men (Marty Foshaug, Larry Linn, Mark Gerry, Mark Schaufler and coach Jack Ayres) posing for individual and group photographs. Image 10 shows a young man (Mark Gerry) holding a trophy with a figure on the top which is emulating someone beginning to dive into a pool. He is wearing a t-shirt which reads "NTHS SWIMMING" and has a design of an animal with a ram's head and front legs and the tail and torso of a dolphin. He has a small, closed-lipped smile on his face. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 11 is very similar to the previous image, but Mr. Gerry's mouth is open. Image 12 is very similar to the previous two images, but it is oriented vertically. Here Mr. Gerry has a large, closed-lipped smile on his face. Image 22 is very similar to images 10-12, but Mr. Gerry is holding the trophy up closer to his face than in the previous images. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 23 is nearly identical to image 22, but it is oriented vertically. Image 34 shows a different young man (Larry Linn) holding a similar trophy to that held by the young man in images 10-12 and 22-23. The trophy shown here has a small leaf or flame decoration on the column portion of the trophy. There is also an inscription at the bottom of the trophy which reads "NORTH THURSTON HIGH OUTSTANDING AWARD 72-73 LARRY LINN." This young man is also wearing the NTHS Swimming t-shirt with the combination ram-dolphin animal on it. This image is oriented horizontally. He is smiling. Image 35 is nearly identical to the previous image, but here the young man has a larger smile on his face. Image 36 is very similar to the previous image, but it is oriented vertically. The young man is also not smiling in this image. Image 37 is very similar to the previous image, but it is oriented horizontally. The young man is also holding the trophy with only his left hand, where in the previous images he is holding it with both hands. Image 38 shows a young man with glasses and jaw-length hair (Mark Schaufler) holding a small plaque with a diver in profile on it. There is also an inscription which reads "Mark Schaufler 'CAPTAIN' NORTH THURSTON HIGH 72-73." He is wearing a t-shirt which reads NORTH THURSTON SWIMMING on the breast. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 39 is very simuilar to the previous image, but some of the young man's hair has fallen down in front of his eyes. This image is oriented vertically. Image 40 is very similar to image 38, but here the young man is looking directly at the camera and has a larger smile on his face. Image 41 is similar to the previous three images, but this image is oriented vertically and the photographer has zoomed in slightly. Image 42 shows a young man (Marty Foshaug) in the t-shirt with the ram-dolphin animal on it. He is holding a trophy similar to those shown in images 10-12, 22-23 and 34-37. The only visible difference between this trophy and the others described above is that this one has a small crown decoration on the pillar portion of the trophy. This young man has curly hair. This image is oriented horizontally, and the young man is facing toward the lft-hand side of the image frame. Image 43 is nearly identical to the previous image, but it is oriented vertically. Image 44 is similar to image 42, but the photographer has zoomed in on the young man, and the young man is facing directly toward the camera. Image 1 shows a man with glasses (Jack Ayres) and a mustache smiling and looking toward the camera. He is wearing a collared, button-up shirt, and he is folding his arms. Image 2 shows the four swimmers and Mr. Ayres posing for a group photo. Mr. Ayres is facing directly toward the camera. Image 3 is very similar to the previous image, but here Mr. Ayres' head is turned slightly toward the left-hand side of the image frame. Image 4 is similar to the previous two images, but Mr. Ayres is putting his arms over the shoulders of two of the young men. (Lacey Leader, 3/14/1973, pg. 5) Printed in alternation along one long edge of each of these film negative strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM" and "KODAK TRI X PAN FILM."
