Data Service, 1975. These four black and white contact print strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. Image 20 shows several men standing around a long table piled with stacks of documents and/or document packets. The man at the right-hand edge of the image has a mustache and is wearing a suit. Image 21 shows a similar scene as the previous image, but two of the men appear to be handing the documents across the table to people. There is a sign partially visible near the left-hand edge of the image, and it appears to read "LEGISLATIVE DISTRIBUTION CENTER." Image 22 shows the man with the mustache and suit from image 20 standing across a table from an older woman in glasses. They are both looking toward the camera and smiling. Image 23 is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 24 is very similar to the two previous images, but here the woman is looking down toward the table. Image 25 is similar to the previous three images, but the woman is looking at the man. Image 26 shows a bearded man in glasses and a woman in a turtleneck sweater standing in an office. Image 27 shows the woman seated at a desk. A nametag is visible on her sweater, but it is not readable. Image 28 shows the woman smiling and looking down at a stack of papers in her hands. The bearded man with glasses is partially visible at the left-hand edge of the image. Image 29 shows the bearded man with glasses in an individual shot. He is looking directly toward the camera. Image 30 is nearly identical to image 29. Image 31 shows a man working at a computer. The man's head and left shoulder occupy the right-hand half of the image. The computer's monitor is visible, and the top of the screen reads "ABANDONED VEHICLES." Image 32 is very similar to the previous image, but the man's head is turned slightly more toward the camera. Image 39 shows a woman with glasses preparing to lift an IBM data storage module out of a data drive. Image 40 shows the woman lifting the data storage module out of the data drive. Image 41 shows the woman looking toward the camera. Image 42 shows a close-up view of the data storage module in the data drive. On the right-hand side of the top of the data storage module is "IBM."
Ken Balsley believed that these images show employees of Allied Data, an early computer firm located in Lacey, Washington. Allied Data originally operated out of space in a basement at Panorama City. (Ken Balsley interview, 8/11/2017)Made/Created
