Description

MAD Festival, unknown dates. These ten black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using four different film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to which film roll they originally came from. Each of the groups will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. The images in group "a" show woodcarvings, ballet dancers, a musical performance, and a baton twirler. Image 29a shows a woodcarving of a sea captain. Image 30a shows a Pacific Northwest native american-style woodcarving of a bird which appears to be a duck. Image 31a shows a Pacific Northwest native american-style carving of an orca whale. Image 32a shows a male ballet dancer holding a female ballet dancer up over his head. Image 33a shows the female ballet dancer with her right arm up in the air and her right leg lifted out in front of her. The male ballet dancer is behind her, but he is almost completely obscured by the female dancer. Image 34a shows the male ballet dancer lifting the female dancer. The female dancer's arms are in a ring over her head. Her right leg is lifted out in front of her. Image 35a shows the female dancer with her arms in a ring over her head. The male dancer is holding her and lowering her near to the ground. Image 36a is nearly identical to image 35a. Image 37a shows the female dancer seated on the male dancer's right shoulder. Image 38a is too underexposed to make anything out. Image 39a shows a man with a mustache singing into a microphone on stage. The top portion of a large speaker is visible in the bottom foreground. A large conga drum is visible at the left-hand edge of the image frame. Image 40a shows a man with a handlebar mustache playing an electric keyboard or organ on stage. Image 41a shows the man shown in image 39a and a woman both singing into microphones on stage. A man playing electric guitar is visible near the left-hand edge of the image frame. Image 43a shows the whole band playing on stage. The visible instruments being played are: electric guitar, electric bass, saxophone, conga drums and keyboard/electric organ. A portion of the crowd is visible along the bottom edge of the image. Image 44a shows the band's saxophone player at the center of the image. Partially visible behind him are the guitarist and the bassist. Image 1a shows the band on stage. The female vocalist is holding her left hand up in the air. Image 4a shows a woman in a dress looking up in the air and holding out her right hand. She may be performing a baton-twirling act, but the baton is not visible in the image frame. The images in group "b" show three young women riding on a parade float, a man shooting a revolver, and various floats in a parade. Image 17b is extremely faded, but appears to show a portion of the audience at the Capital Lakefair. Images 18b and 19b are nearly identical to image 17b, although they are slightly less faded. He appears to be demonstrating quick drawing. He appears to have just fired the revolver, as there is a cloud of smoke at the center of the image. Image 27b is similar to the previous image, but the man is not holding the gun. Image 28b is nearly identical to image 26b. The band is visible at the right-hand side of the image. Image 35c shows a woman and a small child in grass skirts performing a dance. The two men are doing handstands with their knees bent and their legs hanging downward in back. Image 37c is similar to the previous image, but the men appear to be doing flips.
