Description

Lakefair, 1973. These seven black and white film negative strips were created for the Lacey Leader newspaper. These images were created using several different film rolls, so some of the physical numbers on the strips are repeated one or more times. For the purposes of this description, these strips will be grouped according to which film roll they originally came from. Each group will be assigned a lower-case letter to go along with the physical numbers on the strips (ex: 1a, 2a, 3a, 1b, 2b, 3b, etc.) to help differentiate between images. Image 22a shows many men in matching blazers standing on a stage. Several of the men are standing next to young women in formal dresses. The men appear to be members of the Capitalarians group, and the women appear to be contestants in the Miss Thurston County pageant. Image 23a shows five of the women in formal dresses from the previous image seated on a stage. A young woman in a cape is standing at the right-hand side of the image frame. Image 24a is similar to the previous image, but all of the women in the image are seated. The two women nearest to the camera are talking to each other. Image 25a shows a dog swimming in Capitol Lake. Image 26a shows two of the pageant contestants seated on the stage. The contestant at the center of the image appears to be yelling. One of the Capitalarians is standing behind her and holding a bouquet of flowers. Image 27a shows three of the pageant contestants standing in a close group. Two other contestants are entering the image from the right. Image 28a shows a close-up shot of many of the contestants standing in a very close group. One of the contestants appears to be crying. Image 5b shows two standing and two seated pageant contestants on a stage. One of the Capitalarians is standing very near to and partially obscuring the two standing contestants. A man in a military-style uniform and sunglasses is visible standing at the rear portion of the stage. Image 6b shows 5-6 pageant contestants standing in a close group on the stage. A man immediately to the right of the group is holding a camera up to his eye. Image 7b shows spectators seated in stands. In the background near the top left corner is a young man biting his right index finger. Image 8b shows one of the contestants and one of the Capitalarians standing at a microphone on stage. A second Capitalarian is walking toward the contestant with a bouquet of flowers. Image 36b shows many spectators. At the bottom left corner of the image is a man with his head bowed and turned toward the right. He appears to be scratching his head. Image 37b is very similar to the previous image, but the man in the bottom left corner is looking up and to his left. Image 38b shows a ferris wheel with several American flags hanging from it. Image 39b shows spectators standing near the lake. One man is laying down at the edge of the lake and dangling his feet in the water. Image 40b shows four pageant contestant seated on stage. A man is speaking to another contestant at the right-hand edge of the image. Image 16c shows a man with a mustache playing the bagpipes. Image 17c shows a man in a tall, furry hat playing the bagpipes. Image 18c shows a man playing a flute. Image 19b shows one of the pageant contestants seated in a small, open structure on a parade float. The contestant is holding a sceptre. Image 14d shows spectators at a parade. There is a balloon partially visible in the bottom left corner of the image. Image 15d shows more spectators watching the parade. This image was taken from behind the spectators. Image 16d shows a wide section of empty roadway at the parade. Several parade floats and vehicles are visible in the distance. Image 17d shows spectators at the parade. The person furthest to the right is a man with glasses holding a toddler. Image 38e shows several carnival rides along the lake and the Washington State Capitol in the background. Image 39e is nearly identical to the previous image. Image 40e shows many carnival rides. Occupying the left-hand side of the bottom of the image is a striped tent. This image is oriented horizontally. Image 41e is similar to the previous image, but this image is oriented vertically. Printed in alternation along one long edge of these film negatives strips is "KODAK SAFETY FILM" and "KODAK TRI X PAN FILM."
